Should have traded him last TDL for a haul like what Jfresh suggested

Then using the cap space rip off a team needing to shed cap and bring in a solid piece

Like imagine if JR got Oliver Bjorkstrand and a massive package for Miller

Would be GM of the year

I'm sure they would have if they could have

I can't believe there are so many people voting no. He's been Vancouver's best player since his arrival and they are likely a playoff team this season. This is a steal.

I don't know about a steal, but I fail to see how it is bad value, at least in the front half

Last 2 years? They'll be lucky if it doesn't hurt year 3 of his contract. Guys that play his style of game don't age well. If he's 32 and still PPG i'd be amazed.

In year three, the Cap will be over $90 million. If he's a 70-point player then, it will be a good contract. If he's LTIR hurt, then it doesn't matter.

Adding Mikheyev replaces the void left by Toffoli. Lazar’s a plus. They just need another Dman.

Apparently Mikheyev is a real threat on the PK, which is something the Canucks desperately needed.

doesn't matter, he's a team player, character guy and the best player on the roster. even if he's "only" a point per game player it's a value contract. anything more is a bargain.
better than Huberdeau for 2.5 more and an extra year, or Kadri at 7 for 7, 3 years older.

Miller has improved every year with VAN since arriving and I see no reason why he should regress, the team hasn't gotten much better but it hasn't gotten worse. Kadri and Huberdeau are both on a worse team than last year.

Did you say better than huberdeau? Huberdeau is coming off fifth in the league in heart voting. Why does he get such little love?

You can say a lot of the same thing about the Gaudreau contract. Gaudreau only scored 5 more points over the last three seasons, but he is getting paid 20% more and is only 1 year younger at the time the contract kicks in. The Gaudreau contract is rated nearly 90% positive while this one is 40% positive. Nope. Not rational.

They are quite different

1. JG isn't a big physical player. His style is the exact opposite of JTs. Guys that play like JG usually age pretty well.

2. JG has been elite since he's been 22. Miller has only really started playing great 3 years ago.

You'd be very lucky if he was a 70 point guy still. Look at Jamie Benn. Went from near PPG at 26-28. Now at 32 he's a 40 point guy. Likely case for Miller.

Massive W for VAN. Going into the season with their best player as a pending UFA would've been a big distraction. Really great value at $8M AAV. Maybe in 6-7 years it'll look a little rough. So what? A+

I don’t think he got paid based last season alone. His overall career stats are close to Filip Forsberg. Also he’s been very consistent with the Canucks and sometimes you just need the right team to reach the potential that is expected from a 1 st round pick.

Who would they beat to get into the playoffs?

Colorado
St.Louis
Dallas

Edmonton
Calgary
Vegas

Nashville
Minnesota

Anaheim Ducks
Vancouver Canucks
Los Angeles Kings
Seattle Kraken
Winnipeg Jets
Chicago
Arizona

Perhaps they could sneak in as the last WC, but I don't think with even a miracle they get top 3 in the division.

Interesting to see your expected standings. I think you have Dallas rated too highly and Vegas IMO won't make the playoffs. Just to say, I think Vancouver has a chance if their Goaltending is excellent.

I’d vote “fair deal” on this one if I could. The term is about two years too long, but unless he falls off badly this coming season, he would have got at least this much from somebody as a UFA next summer. I can understand the people who say it would have been better to trade him (though I would have waited for the deadline), but if the Canucks want to keep him beyond this season, this is a reasonable price to pay. I’m sure there’s a lot of teams out there who would love to be spending only $8M cap hit on their top scorer. Miller’s best years have been in Vancouver, so it’s nice to see a player who realizes he’s in a good situation and wants to stay there.

They were on a 102-point pace with Boudreau last year IF you ignore half of his record-setting winning streak to start the season. They nearly made the playoffs despite their start under Green. What makes you think they will get worse this year?

They won't get worse, I just think the teams around them got better than they did. I also don't see that pace with Boudreau for the full year.

PP and Secondary Assist specialist. JFresh is lighting him up on Twitter on why this contract is Yikes.

His card is what he is, a very strong offensive player. He wasn't lighting him up. It's easy to quote stats about secondary assists but he carried this team for majority of the season until Petey woke up at the end of the year. Minus the absolutely trash coaching from Green (Benning should have canned him in the offseason and he might still have a job) they would have made the playoffs. Green was so stubborn in making any strategic adjustments and putting players in a position do things offensively that it eventually lead to him being fired. At times, JT willed this team and it was great to see. Comparing his deal to other contract handed out would say the Canucks did well. It costs money to keep your best players around and would have been costly anywhere. 8m is a solid deal.

The Canucks were .649 winning percentage under Boudreau. That's not a fringe team.

Honeymoon wins, in "garbage" time; happens every season in the NHL.

Or... Travis Green was garbage as we all saw. His inability to change was his downfall and why he's not been offered another job. He wasn't a good coach.

He’ll probably put up 70-80 pts for the next 2 seasons and then he’ll fall off a cliff.

Canucks aren't far away from contending

/Gestures wildly at the Defence

The Forward group is good and we know Demko is great, but he needs to play at a .930 level again for the team to have a chance. The need so much to go right just to make the playoffs, let alone contend.

I voted no, I like him as a player but not at $8M against the cap until he is 37.

Oh, that NMC update doesn't help much.

On the brightside, San Jose would've given him like a 3 team trade list in the last few years

This is a so-so deal. I think Miller has proven he's a very good player so there's not much chance this contract completely flops but I think they gave him a year or two more than they would have wanted ideally.

The defense is mediocre at worst. Yeah, they need a lot of things to go right, but the odds of those things breaking right are relatively favorable. Demko doesn't need to be a .930 goaltender
