With a lot of players on expiring contracs I'd be careful with retentions. We don't know yet if Bert can be resigned and then there's Määttä and Suter and Mr. Ned that all would bring in a much better deal with retention. I'd like to keep the two retention slots we have.

Agreed, I'm guessing the only players likely traded are Suter maybe, I would be ok with holding onto him, Maatta and maybe Hagg, Oesterle or Walman if teams are interested in them.
Obviously things can change with Bertuzzi, Larkin and Nedeljkovic but I expect them to stick around.

The only one I want to be traded that would benefit from retention is Määttä but until the others are safely "signed and sealed" I don't want to risk jeopardising any potential good deals. Samoskevich and a 2nd isn't a good return if it means that a really good Bertuzzi trade falls through due to us having no retention slots left and he walks for nothing.

If Bertuzzi is to be traded, there will be a number of teams that would be interested in acquiring him. The return may not be quite as good with retention but I'm sure we would get a good return even if we have to take back a contract.
