2023-2024 cap crunch when Horvat resigns

Created by: Reason
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 4, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's say Horvat signs for around market value at 7X7, how is this team going to fill out their roster next season? Let's say the team wants to resign Kuzmeko for market value for a decent 3rd liner (assuming he ends up as a 3rd liner), and resigns Schenn for a bargain 800k assuming he doesn't regress below a bottom pair defenseman. With this roster the team is nearly 5M over the cap (Poolman may not play again but this is still a year away so he has lots of time to recover so he is included).
The team still needs to add an additional 4 players to the roster and is running the same RD as this season and last (getting older), which is a major achilles heal. Unless the salary cap goes up significantly next season I expect it will continue to be costly to move bottom six forwards making average money. So if the Canucks want to move players like Pearson and or Dickinson it won’t be cheap and frankly they don't have the assets to add if they want to try and build to be competitive now. Lastly, let’s say they do move Pearson and Dickinson, that creates 5.9M in cap space but they would now need to sign 6 players to fill out their roster and only have approximately 1.2M to do it. Lastly, EP and VP are due the next season, and I would expect they will all get substantial raises. Going to be really interesting to see how they try and navigate this cap crunch next season…

They’re only over the cap because you made Schenn an 8 million dollar player

Let's hope the Canucks do not roll with that 6 again in 23-24.

Ideally, they should unload both Myers and Poolman and look to rebuild that right side.
They may have to overpay for someone like Severson if he hits the open market.

Yup I agree. I think they need two top 4 RD added to the roster, even then, without significant internal improvement I still don't see this team being a contender, playoff team yes but I think they are still along ways off the Colorado's, Tampa Bays Carolina's etc.

We can't all be Mr. Perfect..

Regardless of the extra zero, the team will still struggle to be cap compliant with a 23 man roster and that's without upgrading the RD position. Moving money out to try and improve the team will be problematic for the same reasons mention in my essay.
