The fact that Pierre Dorion managed to compel Erik Brannstrom to take less than what Dylan Gambrell got is really something.

This is a bargain for the Ottawa Senators.

Vote yes.

Good contract. If he performs there will be more zeros in his next one.

Also, what exactly has Rasmus Sandin done over this kid? Take note all.

low risk signing, they can send him down if need be (dont remember if waiver eligible or not) and if not he pans out and its a good signing

Love this deal for the Sens, also sets a nice standard to fellow unsigned RFA Rasmus Sandin

no way, Leaf Nation and haters all agree Sandin is worth at least $4 million AAV.

sarcasm alert.

Reality is Sandin is Dermott V2.0, sorry kid LHD are easier to find and you currently sitting 4th on the depth chart with 2 proven Nhl'ers in Mette and Benn breathing down your neck.

Remember when Brannstrom was the 2nd coming of Erik Karlsson? Good times.

That's about fair. Idk what kind of future he has in Ottawa, but he's good enough to be an an NHL regular, and unless one of JBD/Thomson leapfrog him in camp he's easily one of Ottawa's six best defenseman.

I'll be zero percent shocked if he's a scratch opening night for Zaitsev, but right now Brannstrom-Holden should be the 3rd pair. Was one of Ottawa's best D pairs last season (when they actually used them together), and they just seem a natural complement to each other. Won't happen unless Ottawa gets Z off the team, or at least is comfortable dumping his useless ass in the Bay of Quinte

Sandin probably deserves a slightly higher AAV based on his better offensive production (28 points in 88GP vs. 31 points in 116 for Brannstrom). I haven't watched enough of them to comment on defensive ability. Maybe Sandin gets $1.1M AAV on a 1-year deal. Knowing Dubas, he'll probably overpay for no reason.

I think we either see 1.2mill x 1 year (can play a 21 man team but Holl has to go) or 1.65mill x 2 years (tad higher than Liligren)

But if hes asking for more than 2mill which seems to be the case hold firm and drag this out as it worked well before with Nylander

And no Dubas wont overpay lul. Dubas has handled Gross in the past and got Nylander to take a cheaper deal than his original ask. Was a long and hard battle but in the end he won. If Dubas was willing to give Sandin more than 2mill he would have been signed rn but from whats been reported both sides have a price and arent budging

As in general if Liligren got 1.4mill x 2 years thats probs gonna be the baseline for negotiations unless its a 1 year deal

Nylander was a Home Run. Matthews contact term was a bad mistake, but I guess it was just the cost of always being up against the cap.

This is an okay deal, even if they end up being a healthy scratch most nights. Getting a 7th D who can play both left and right side is worth a little more than league minimum.

Matthews doesn't like long deals as was reported byCJ and it makes sense as he can maxamize his earnings had nothing to do with being up against the cap lul

As for him the logic is there why sign an 8 year when you can sign 2 five year deals and more than double your earnings. Leafs will give him what he wants and he likes his celebrity status and teammate and sidekick marner it's a win-win

Expecting a 13.5mill x 5-6 year extension come the summer of 2023

I love that a Sens signing turned into a discussion about the Leafs.

Never fails.

Good contract but a reminder that Dorion gave a PPG center for a third pairing undersized defender and a late 2nd.

Haha. Hard to look at this signing and not draw a comp. to Sandin.

Crazy how much hype he had. Don't see much of an NHLer in him. Likely AHL or 7th d man.

He will probably go for an 8 year deal since he will be turning 27
