Extending dmen

Description
This is the keep-the-vets-move-the-kids scenario.

Not likely NJD extends both Severson and Graves. But re-signing one of them may work. I think that is a playoff-caliber blueline below.

Excellent example of why we shouldn't extend those defensemen. We should be doing the exact opposite, keep the kids and let the vets walk. If we had ELC guys in place of Severson and Graves, we'd have at least 8m more space with which to make a big signing or trade, like Meier or Pastrnak in 2023 or even Matthews in 2024

Offensive RHD. Top 4 among Devils D prospects behind Hughes, Nemec, and imo Casey; he would make the team this year if not for the Marino trade.

Not really either. So I guess more of a “two-way” guy.

Stylistically…think righty Nick Leddy. Headsy player. Good at rushing the puck, but not strictly offensive guy. Adequate in his own zone. Can lay the occasionally surprising hit.

Led AHL dmen in fewest even-strength GA/60. I have hard time calling him just an offensive player.

But agree he would be up this year (and actually was supposed to get a couple call ups last year, but covid issues got in way).

I don't see a scenario where:

1) Blackwood plays well enough for a team to pay that price for him in a trade; and
2) Blackwood plays poorly enough for the Devils to still trade him for that.

Montreal is a doubly strange idea considering their recent experience with injury-prone goaltenders. Devils should just hope he can find his game and not end up in a Samsonov situation.

Fair. Utica had elite goaltending so his defensive impact is hard to quantify but you're right that he's not one dimensional.

I agree that it should not be the plan, but nice to have options. Some of the Severson talk has gotten close to “NJD has to move him”. Which as we know, we don’t.

Montreal could be in goalie market if losing Price to injury and losing Allen next summer to UFA. But I mostly picked them because I like Dobes a lot.

I doubt Blackwood could get that kind of return unless he has a serious bounceback season. He's closer to being unqualified that getting a high 2nd and decent goalie prospect.

Signing one is not a crazy scenario at all, particularly if this group gels & finds immediate success this season. Bahl and Walsh are nice prospects, but far from elite / sure things ... if the team exceeds expectations this year, it will change perceptions regarding the team needs.

To state the obvious, it all comes down to how Team Fitz projects cap needs next 5 years or so. Who they believe are long term core and who is along for the ride. Not all these prospects will grow into the players the fans dream of. Whether we like it or not, there will be players that just don't reach the level originally hoped for. Saving cap for a player who hasn't proven anything vs. Signing someone you know, like Severson, may just come down to this year's team performance and how the core D group comes together, which combos find chemistry etc. Will be fun to watch.

I don't think there is much appetite for Blackwood right now. He's still young and has potential but the rest of the NHL see what NJ is seeing in him. They went out and got Vanacek for a reason. If Blackwood was at a cheaper cost, than I think maybe but a 2nd and Dobes would be too high for me personally.

We got VV because our 19 backups this past year were zamboni driver material

Yes MB is in a prove it or move on year

Not arguing your value for him just pointing out the reason for VV

The ability is there with Blackwood. We have seen it for long stretches. But the maturity and approach have not developed. He is someone that could benefit from change of scenery.
