Just an Idea

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 6, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know Byron's cap hit isn't great, but the guy can skate, and he can skate FAST. He literally already fits the mold of Bednar's style. I really think he'd be a good presence in the bottom 6, and he already has Lehky here. I really think he could be an underrated pickup, maybe a cheap signing in free agency when we give the big bucks to Nate?

Before someone flames me: No, I'm not saying Byron is given for free, I'm unsure of the price to acquire him. I'm thinking a 3rd or something like that?
Trades
COL
  1. Byron, Paul ($1,700,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Obviously there needs to be retention. we're not taking his full cap hit. My real question is the price. I don't anticipate it being too high since he's a 33 y/o pending UFA with less than 10 points and he's had injury issues last year.

Sadly Byron has hip injuries and will likely start on LTIR, if not being out for the season. If he was healthy, I don' think he should get more than a 5th round pick with retention.

I'm hoping he comes back. I really think he would fit well and I'm sure he would love the chance to play with Lehky again.

I'll take anything for him, he is a speed demon but no fit anymore.

5th seems reasonable

When he's healthy, he is soooo underrated. Unfortunately lately he's been injured a lot. Small guy who plays like he's 6'3 and its finally starting to catch up to him. I doubt he's traded at all frankly. Habs have no reason to use a retention slot on him and no team should trade for him at full cost, even for free unless salary is going back to the Habs but even then there's a possibility he doesn't come back this year at all which basically makes trading for him impossible at this point.

Weird take but MTL prefer not trading him over retaining. Reasoning behind that is there is Dadonov, Drouin, Monahan, Allen to retain on potentially. The retaintion on Dadonov, Drouin, Monahan could really rise their value, but for Byron its going from future considerations to a 6th round pick, which doesn't really worth it when Drouin could go from a 6th to a 3rd+ with retained.

It makes no sense for Colorado to spend the few assets they have on a guy as injury prone as Byron, who would also be more expensive than someone like Motte who they can sign for free in UFA.

The Avs also just wasted $2m on Ryan Murray last year so they probably won't have an appetite for another injury prone guy, especially when it would cost assets.

It would be smarter to just go with some internal guys at 3RW and reassess nearer the TDL. Or if they want to spend a pick/prospect then aim for a younger guy with less injuries and wear.

I get that, but at the same time, I'm not really sure how comfortable I am feeding Olausson to the wolves on the 3rd line or sending Kaut up when his develop has been so screwed up by being constantly shoved down when he's NHL-ready. Motte is actually a good idea, though, I'll give you that.

The retention slot is worth more than a 5th for the habs so it can't work

Olausson won't get fed to the wolves. He needs at least another year in the AHL to learn defense.

Kaut could get a shot in preseason but most likely it'll be Maltsev, Sedlak, or Blidh who edge him out. I'd be looking at a prospect swap deal with Kaut before opening night if he can't take a job in camp.

Motte is a nice stylistic fit for Colorado but is more of a 4th liner. I'd take him over not doing anything though, assuming that he's relatively cheap.
