Tampa isnt even a top-10 team

Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 7, 2022
Published: Sep. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Now that I have your attention, let me know what you think about this way-too-early team for the 2024-25 NHL Season.

(NOT EVERYONE ON LTIR IS ELIGIBLE. I DIDN’T WANT A BUNCH OF TRADES WITH CAP DUMPS SO I JUST PUT THEM THERE).

2022-23 Season:

The return for the players traded before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline is insignificant for this ACGM, as at most the Canadiens will receive for any of the pending UFAs is a second round pick. Those moves will not be included in this post.

Prediction for post-training camp 2022: Juraj Slafkovsky is sent down to Laval after the nine games allowed before burning a year off his ELC. His contract slides another year and he will be an RFA in 2026. Should also mention that because the Canadiens are *trying* or should be, the kids (Slafkovsky, Guhle and Barron) will not be on the NHL roster for most of the season, but rather getting seasoned in the AHL. There’s no reason to rush them. Barron will get the first call up if there’s an injury on the back end.

The Lundkvist trade is one that I feel that if it was going to happen, it would have happened already. Drury is smart and he'll wait for the deal that he wants (or if he actually needs to make one). Mysak is a mid-6 C as his ceiling and Lundkvist has is a top-4 RD so in terms of potential, it's about even, but since Lundkvist is older and closer to meeting his actual potential, I've included a mid-round pick (4th round) but a 3rd round pick would also be acceptable as a sweetener.

While it would be funny if the 2023 Florida Panthers became the 2022 Montreal Canadiens and the Canadiens (who own both teams' picks) were to win the draft lottery again, it is very, very, VERY unlikely that it would happen (let alone the Canadiens winning again).

I'd love Bedard. We're not getting him, but I'd love to have him. Michkov, yes he's an incredible all around player, but there's the whole Russia and his contract thing. The player I'd love to see wearing bleu-blanc-rouge is Adam Fantilli from the University of Michigan. He's big, really big. At 17, he's 6'3, 192 lbs and built like a tank. He'll look great on a line centring Juraj Slafkovsky on his left and potentially Kirby Dach on his right. He's got size, speed, hands, and finishing ability. If the Canadiens have either the second or third pick in the draft, which isn't a huge stretch considering what they have(n't) done to improve, they should take a flier on him.

Now that the news about Jake Allen nearing a contract extension with Montreal has been out for a few hours, I’ve gone ahead and signed him to a 3 x $3.25 million deal, a bit of a raise from his current salary. While Allen definitely gives some veteran confidence, he’s still not the greatest backstop and the Canadiens should look for a goaltender via trade or in free agency.

Tristan Jarry could be an option as he is slated to be an unrestricted free agent. A deal in the $6.5 to $7 million range should be expected.

Perhaps most unsurprisingly, Cole Caufield signs a max extension with Montreal, somewhere in the neighbourhood of $7.5 to $8 million for 8 years.

2023-24 Season:

The salary cap increases to $84 million.

Fantilli is drafted and joins the Canadiens immediately to begin the season. The tank is officially over and the development and maturation stage can begin.

Before the season, Montreal signs Logan Mailloux to an entry level contract. As much as the situation regarding his past and his shoulder injury, Montreal cannot afford to lose a right handed offensive defence man. He will either play an overage season in the OHL (to make up for COVID, suspension, injury) or make the jump to the AHL.

Guhle and Barron become full-time NHL defencemen, and play in Montreal’s top-4. Slafkovsky makes the transition from EUR to NA hockey and moves to the NHL.

Montreal still fails to make the playoffs but they take the next step from being basement team to wildcard contender.

Pierre-Luc Dubois of the Winnipeg Jets becomes an unrestricted free agent and hits the open market, signing with the team that he and his agent declared he wished to play with. He signs a 5 x $7.5 million contract.

I like what you are doing here but the contracts on LTIR will make it harder to do the things you want to do. (Other than Price)
    PLD also stays at C
If Farrell, Kidney and Mesar aren't on the team in 2023-2024 and nor is Fantilli, then it works out but Matheson also has a spot on this team. Perhaps Edmunston is gone by then.

I put those contracts on LTIR instead of doing cap dump trades. Most of them have positive value so I decided to skip that part of creating an ACGM.

About PLD, I know he’s a centre but he can also play LW. It really depends if Fantilli is a true centre or not. But yes they could be switched.
