Description
Instead of tanking for Bedard. This is a legitimate pivot to actually getting back into contention reasonably quickly if they can sign a marquee UFA on defense in the offseason. The two trades solidify the goaltending position quite comfortably IMO.

Very similar to what Gorton pulled off w/NYR where Lundqvist quickly flipped into Shesterkin/Georgiev, some early picks and a few UFAs, signed Fox, and ultimately a team that is right into contention again pretty quickly. Understandably NYR is a more desirable UFA market than MTL; however, they paid up to bring in Panarin - and MTL can create the cap space to do same with these moves.

Canadiens have to pay to get this done - but I think the timing is good b/c Gibson's value is kind of low. Whether Gibson waives or not I have no idea, but I would have to say he's probably interested in experiencing a real market after toiling away in Anaheim for so many years. Norlinder is a solid prospect, but LD is getting crowded in MTL, plus a first . That's a serious package. There's also plenty of room for Armia in ANH but the cap dump is payed for with 3rd in this very deep draft year.

Cant see the Avs moving Annunen, he does have NHL level potential, maybe not a starter but could be a solid young cheap back up for them as they move into more of a cap crunch

Too much backfire and set the build back a few years, for me to pull that trigger, especially with such a stacked 23 draft, even a 2oa pick could get a ridiculous Russian kid. There’s a limited amount of guys that would get that 23 pick.

Gibson's put up a .904 SV% and 3.07 GAA behind suspect defenses the last three years in Anaheim; Jake Allen has been playing behind similarly mediocre teams the last 2 years in Montreal and has put up a .906 SV% and 3.01 GAA. I don't think Gibson is as bad as his numbers have shown, but I don't get the idea of trading a big package for him. I get that he's still young enough and that contract is affordable if he becomes the goalie he was a few years ago, but that's a pretty big if.

feels like habs are better off finishing bottom 6 at least with how stacked the draft is, could end up w either fantilli, dvorsky, carlsson or yager. def have top 6 potential and maybe franchise on fantilli, and ofc bedard and michkov.

I wouldn't give up a 1st round pick for Gibson. Don't get me wrong, he's good but Habs don't need that right now.

May opt for a younger guy or give Montembault time to develop under Allen for the year. I'd do the Norlinder, Armia, Allen and a 4th + 5th picks in 2023.. But Stolarz is not ready to be a 1st goalie, so Anaheim would be in the same situation that Habs are in right now.

I wouldn't see the trade happening because of that.

From the Anaheim perspective those pieces you are willing to part with are low value filler. Norlinder is a mid-tier defensive prospect, Armia is an overpaid 4th liner with term and Allen is a pending UFA. The only thing in that original trade proposal of any real value is the 1st round pick.

So yeah, no way this trade would ever happen. Its not good in the slightest for Anaheim.

Gibson didn't want to go to Toronto who are on the knocking on the door of a cup, why would he waive to go to Montreal with your current spot in the rebuild?

Gibson has said he is quite happy in Anaheim and he wants to win here, so this "real market" crap you are pushing is rich.

And Cap Value for 1st pick, Gibson ain't worth it unless a late LATE pick.. in 2024..

And why does everybody talk about the pending UFAs not being worth the trades???? Do they actually know that the player will hate it so much they won't sign for a few years after??... Are those cities so bad that players won't go back? Having been in Anaheim a few times, it's a good city.. Allen may want to stay ..

Calgary is the perfect example, they traded for Huberdeau who was pending UFA yet signed for 8 years after being traded. Allen could potentially sign for an extra 2 to 4 years and provide them with a good backup or potential no 1 if they want to rebuild at a very low cost vs 6M$/year for Gibson who gave up the same type of numbers with a similar team in front of him.

Habs wouldn't want a 6M$ hit right now, the speach on Price is that unless he goes under surgery to correct he may be done, but there is that potential that should he go under the knife there COULD be a possibility of a return in a year ro two hence 10M$ back on the cap which they need to figure out if that happens (and it looks like it won't... BUT... )

Not for that price.
Plus I’m pretty sure Allen is signing an extension with MTL

Yall gotta chill. You and I agree the trade fit is bad on both sides so I'm not sure what ruffled your feathers. Especially about Allen... is he your brother-in-law or something?

lol you'd never get a top5 pick for Gibson who's been terrible for years. Pure delusion on your part. The other pieces are filler and shouldnt matter in the slightest. That's what filler is not substantial nor important!
