How to Make the 2024-2025 Offseason Easier to Execute

Created by: Hockyluv21
Team: 2023-24 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 8, 2022
Published: Sep. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the Carolina-Vancouver trade, Carolina's previously-massive UFA list shrinks to just Aho and Skjei, on top of expirings). Pettersson would become the best possible insurance policy to Aho, while still leaving enough cap space to potentially extend him.

Canucks decline easily. If you want Pettersson then Aho (with an extension) better be coming to Vancouver. No reason for the Canucks to move him for any other player on the Canes

It could be any cap-strapped club. I was just using Zuccarello as an example. Also, does Vancouver really want so much cash tied up in three centers, pending Horvat's extension?

I'm trying to do math here. To keep Pettersson, the Nucks may have to trade or let Horvat go in UFA if they want any depth at all. By all accounts, though, it sounds like the Nucks want to keep Horvat in the fold, so it makes me wonder what the plans are. It seems like the Canucks would benefit from allocating some of that center money to an actually-good RHD like Pesce.

I realize that is probably true. My question is about Vancouver's pending cap conundrum with Miller and likely Horvat getting long-term extensions. It seems as if reallocating that forward power to defense is a smart move from a cap perspective.

Canucks have 14 mill to re-sign Horvat next offseason, none of our top 3 centers are going anywhere anytime soon

Where's the 14 million coming from, exactly? You guys are up against the ceiling with little-to-no expiring contracts.

yes they are all quality centers worth their contracts
and I doubt there are many teams that are willing to dump someone averaging more than a ppg for nothing

oh yeah since we are soon to be cap-strapped let's just trade away pettersson instead of myers, dickinson, poolman, or pearson

Poolman will be ltiretired which is 2.5 Canucks have 2.5mill in buyouts coming off. Canucks alone right now with Poolman on ltir will have just over 3mill in capspace We have overages and bonuses coming off the books too.

I mostly agree with you. Minnesota's kind of in a cap pickle because they may go long-term/high-dollar with Boldy's next RFA deal, but they can theoretically pull that off by simply replacing Dumba with Addison.

Pettersson and Miller both play C and LW so it's very possible that only one ends up playing C. Horvat will get his contract extension, we have the cap space for that without trading anyone. If Vancouver needs to free up cap space next year, we have a few players that could be traded to do so, Garland, Boeser, etc.... No reason or need to trade Pettersson.

First of all, there is no way the Canes consider that. The Canes have no need for another C, so it makes no sense to sell off core pieces for another C, let alone 2 of the Canes most valuable players in Turbo and Pesce. Considering that points wise, EP40 hasn’t even scored 70 points yet, mainly due to injuries, so the only way he is getting this package from the Canes is if he is a 100 point player.

Vancouver can decline all they want, it would be Carolina that shoots this deal down before that.

Your math is flawed. Myers 6 million dollar cap hit expires the same offseason Pettersson needs a new contract. Unless Pettersson is getting a 6 mil raise, we don’t have too much to worry about
