You're never gonna get most Devils fans on board with that deal without Severson. With Severson, it's an instant decline.

Devils are in such a win-now mode this season that they're willing to give up Holtz+1st for Meier... but also don't keep Severson for the run. Not seeing the logic here.

Devils aren't trading Holtz for Meier, give it a rest.

Severson, Holtz, and a 1st? AND...$9 million x 8 years?
Both trade and contract are a lot.

I am guessing a trade return closer to Fiala...and contract too.

A prospect like Gritsyuk, Foote, or similar
A pick between 11-32
And maybe contract

and around $7.8m extension

If they do pursue Meier for whatever reason, one of the young guys on the current roster would have to go or Fitzgerald would have to forget that the salary cap exists. One of Sharangovich or Bratt for sure especially if they both do great unless Meier and the other two are only going to be like 6m on long-term extensions.

Yeah, I think something like Fiala or DeBrincat in terms of worst case, or 3 A-assets in the best case for them which they probably won't get unless there is a bidding war due to contenders who are willing to overpay for a rental.

That being said I think SJ is headed to a rebuild so maybe they would deal him to LA for Turcotte+ other futures+players for the cap.

Meier gets more like 8.5 IMHO.
I know Holtz and the 1st is a deal most NJD fans balk at and add Severnson and I agree it’s a no without more going back from the sharks.
but for Meier NJD would have to deal Holtz or Mercer, and that first would end up being 18-25 depending on NJD season. and with Meier they would have a legit Contender Offense, the key would be Goaltending to me weather or not they can go on a run in the playoffs.
Severnson will be kept by NJD and sharks can go after him in FA
what about Holtz plus a cap dump like Johnson and a 1st for Meier and Reimer?
we can take back whichever goaltender is underperforming and that gives you a vet with solid playoff performances in net and an Eliet power forward.

even if all these deals work out my concern is Holtz Eklund Bordeleau and Coe are all on short term ELC and will need significant raises even if it’s only bridge deals and we are looking really tight agains the cap. this doesn’t even consider we would be drafting top 5 in 23 and that pick would warrant a deal as well in 3-4 years.
would be over the moon if that Dillion deal went through we need a guy like him and he would pair with Karlsson to give some grit and solid D to that pairing. Hatakka is a 3LD at best and Knyzhov would easily take his place once healthy.

Then just keep him or these Sharks fans gotta find another team that's willing to give up a prospect anywhere near Holtz/Mercer for him... and add to it. I wish them luck.

If the Devils "have to" do Holtz/Mercer + 1st to get Meier then it just isn't happening and there's no need to keep beating the drum.

Not saying the deal with Severson attached was fair, but based on these replies I hope SJ just resigns/keeps Meier and fun be always with Hertl to sell tickets while the ship continues to burn. I'd rather have that than lose Meier with just uncertain quantity coming back. Also I would be stoked if he signed at $7.8 mil but that probably only happens if his production dips compared to last season. If he keeps it rolling or improves further on this bad team he's likely signing for somewhere in the 8-9mil range.

if Meier signs then yes I agree. but i’ve seen 20-30 NJD trades for Meier that are very underwhelming. you have to pay for young Elite level tallents (yea Meier isn’t Elite right now but if he is close to 30G and PPG level again by 23 TDL i would assume he is considered elite by most pundits.

It makes sense not to re-sign him. Nemec isn't going to be ready next season.

Re-read my point. If they're in such a "win now" mode that they make a trade like this, then they'd want to keep Severson for the "win now" run as an own-rental.

If Pastrnak leaves Boston, it would be for a team where he has a chance to win the Cup. Sharks aren't close to that.

Or Devils can keep Holtz, Severson and the 1st and just sign Pastrnak themselves.
