Rodrigues and Accrue Cap Space

Created by: UpsideDownQue
Team: 2022-23 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 9, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Im not sure when the TDL is this year but assuming its the same as last season - 186 days in the season, 146 before the TDL and 40 after the TDL, then with this 22 man roster with a $80,752,500 cap hit for 146 days will accrue enough cap space to have a cap hit of $88,878,375 for the remaining 40 days. This means they can add up to $8,125,875 in AAV at the deadline, which should be more than enough to make some additions if they choose to do so

I think you're forgetting about the bonuses. They'll probably want to keep at least $2m free for the full season on average to account for bonuses and avoid having overages in 2023 when the cap will be super tight due to raises to MacKinnon, Byram, Newhook, and Meyers.

Then whatever accrues on top of $2m can be used for TDL additions.

Needless to say it might be best to avoid adding a $2m.forward for now.until they've banked some cap.

Yeah I think the only preseason adds are going to be PTO’s that at most translate to a guy being added at $1M.

Id rather deal with the bonuses later and maximize their chances of winning now - its no guarantee that the young guys will even get much of a bonus anyway. Theres a breakdown here: https://puckpedia.com/salary-cap/entry-level-performance-bonuses

If Newhook and Byram have great seasons then they may each get 850k in bonuses but I think its very unlikely that Byram meets his B level bonuses

Theres gonna be a cap crunch next year anyway and some cap will probably have to be moved out - Id rather make the most out of MacKinnon's last year at 6.3M

Curious to know how you calculated the accrued cap space number.

Its just a weighted average based on the # of days in the season:

(days before the TDL)/(total days in season)*(pre-TDL cap hit) + (days after the TDL)/(total days in season)*(post-TDL cap hit) = 82.5M

with 186 days in the season (146 days before the TDL, 40 days after the TDL) and a pre-TDL cap hit of $80,752,500:

(post-TDL cap hit) = (82,500,000 - 146/186*80,752,500)/(40/186) = 88,878,375

Then the difference between the pre- and post-TDL cap hits is the AAV you can add at the deadline: 88,878,375 - 80,752,500 = 8,125,875
