That's a major steal for Detroit, How could we turn this down at the TDL.

I’m starting to feel this a bad for Florida lol. Mind you the way I looked at it is: will cost a decent amount to dump hornqvist plus he as an m-ntc and they get some useful depth pieces that are on expiring contracts. Also Bennett had term while he’s been very good for them lundell easily steps in to his second line spot

At first glance this looks good for Detroit but when taking a closer look the sparkles fade away.

Hörnqvist has zero value for Detroit, he won't be here more than a month or so, Bennet has scored better than 0.5PPG exactly once in his career and we're stuck with him for two more years as an overpaid 3C/LW and his cap cost will not expire until after Seider and Raymond have to be resigned and could well cause huge problems.

The best part of the deal is the 2nd round pick but it is a late pick. Määttä could possibly fetch us that pick at the TDL without taking something back and Sundqvist really is a player that we don't have enough of and is perhaps best kept.

Still lots of teams need to get cap compliant, if the deal were done now. Obviously, you can't sign a player and trade him right away, but if you could, I'd be ok with that for this return. I really like the Maata signing, and see huge value at the cap hit. At 27, he still has room to regain his game and meet his expectations. That being said, in Bennett, you have your 2C. This opens up trading Suter for more capital.

For replacing Maata, all the added capital allows for a trade. Sandin, Povorov, names we dont expect, names we do like Martinez,, Petersen, Mcnab, etc. Hell, maybe even Chychrun.

Maata could fetch a pick at the tdl. Sure. But so can Suter. If Bennett steps into 2C, which I think he easily could, there is no need for Suter, as Rasmussen is your 3C of the future. Suter is UFA and likely won't be able to be brought back, but he is going to be very useful to a team for a deep playoff run.

As for cap issues, that won't matter. A lot of dead cap is going to be coming off or dropping in value in the next couple years, plus the cap ceiling will rise substantially. Worst case is a buyout or demotion to the minors. I see Bennett as a great stopgap 2C, better than Suter.

Suter is way better than Bennet and he's almost 2 million cheaper. Detroit have plenty of cap-room next year but not the year after with both Seider and Raymond needing big contracts. We will, in fact, be under the cap by only a million or so with Seider, Raymond, Larkin, Vrána, Bertuzzi, Rasmussen, Lindström, Nedeljkovic, Berggren, Veleno, Suter, and Johansson all needing new contracts by then.
