Roy and ZAR

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2022
Published: Sep. 11, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
LAK get an upgrade at Left D, First and Replacement RHD. Leafs get an Upgrade at RHD, a good RHD Prospect and a 3rd.

Kerfoot to any team for cap reasons.

Subban signed for depth.
ZAR signed for the 4th line.
Rodrigues signs the Kase deal of 1.5 x 1. He can play all over our top 9.

This is a 21 player roster which is far from optimal. It addresses most of the needs the team has.

This is a new LA trade for me. I know LA are super high on Roy but they still have Doughty, Durzi, Holl, Walker, Brandt (in the future) on the right side. Getting Sandin for the left would be very nice for them.

Thoughts?

Absolutely no reason for LA to do that trade.

I explained my thought process in the description. I definitely see a reason why they would contemplate this. What is your reasoning for saying they wouldn't be interested?

Absolutely no way we would trade Matt Roy and a third for Rasmus Sandin and a first, and no way we would trade A prospect Helge Grans for second/third-pairing rental defender Justin Holl.

Any "upgrade" Sandin (who had 16 points in 51 games) may represent over Edler (who had 19 points in 41 games and is a better defender) is dwarfed by the difference between Roy and Holl. And Grans is hugely more valuable than Holl, too.

I know that you Toronto guys consider Sandin a future Norris Trophy candidate, but until he actually shows that potential to disinterested third parties, we'll pass on him.

Because you’re a stats reader. Take your time this season and watch a few games and you’ll understand why I think he’s worth that much.

I’m not saying he’s worth that much. But it will cost that much for it to make sense for LA to move him. Did I word that correctly?

"I know LA are super high on Roy but they still have Doughty, Durzi, Holl, Walker, Brandt (in the future) on the right side."

That's like saying the Leafs don't need Matthews because they already have Tavares, Marner, and Nylander at forward, so they should give him away for futures that don't help the team now. Sandin might have potential, but right now he's a healthy scratch for the Leafs.

Matt Roy was the Kings #1 defenseman for most of last season and the playoffs, and he carried the Kings defense to game 7 against the Western Conference Finalist Oilers. He might eventually be available, but right now he is irreplaceable. The Kings won't be trading him.

Matt Roy - Very good top 4 RHD on a good contract
Matthews - Generational Elite Goal Scoring Centre

No... that is not "That's like saying the Leafs don't need Matthews because.."

I understand why LA doesn't do this trade though. But Sandin would make LA's left D better right now but their right D would take a hit.

I'm not saying it's a direct comparable, but it's the same logic. You don't need a very good player because you already have other very good players. Doesn't make any sense.

I don't think Sandin is better than any of Anderson, Walker, or Edler. Coin flip on whether he's better then Bjornfot (who will likely not be in the starting six for LA this season).
