Predictions and line combinations

Team: 2022-23 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2022
Published: Sep. 11, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Blue Jackets seem to be in a better position than I had thought before. They made a huge splash in free agency with Johnny Gaudreau, and they seem to be taking the next step in their retool. I know this will be a HOT take, but I am going to predict this team to make the playoffs this year. As long as they can do better defensively and they keep it up with their offense, I think they have a chance. Their biggest problem is that top center position, but I think they should be able to develop Johnson or Sillinger into it over time.

Key additions: Johnny Gaudreau, Erik Gudbransson
Key losses: Oliver Bjorkstrand, Alexandre Texier (for this year)
Leader in Goals: Patrik Laine
Leader in Points: Johnny Gaudreau
Best Defenseman: Zach Werenski
Rookies: Kent Johnson, Kirill Marchenko
Breakout Candidate: Cole Sillinger
Bounceback Candidate: Zach Werenski
Biggest Strength: Top 6
Biggest Weakness: Centre depth
Offseason Grade: A-
Prediction: 93 points, 5th in metropolitan (WC)

My lines would be…

Gaudreau - Roslovic - Laine
Johnson - Sillinger - Voracek
Nyquist - Jenner - Marchenko
Robinson - Kuraly - Danforth

Werenski - Peeke
Gavrikov - Boqvist

I doubt any team could make the playoffs with that center depth.

it looks bad at first glance but it really depends on how good Johnson and Silinger are. If both guys can play centre and do it to their potential it can be good. But if they are just average, their centre lineup gets shredded for sure.

the depth isnt the problem with the centers, it just none of them are stars (yet). the three of them are really solid 2nd to 3rd line C's but no star

agreed but even if they play well im optimistic they finish better then boston florida toronto or tampa. id still take all their rosters over columbus's

experience pays off near the end of the season and all 4 of those teams have a ton of experience

As a #CBJ fan I'm not too worried about the center depth, Roslovic and Jenner are both capable 2Cs. Sillinger was great as an 18 yr old and Sean Kuraly is a solid bottom 6C. It's nearly impossible to acquire top-6 Centers in the league, you have to draft and develop them and we have two young studs that might fill that role in Johnson and Sillinger. Don't sleep on Roslovic though, he's a skilled guy that's been really inconsistent but he was dynamite down the stretch last year. I'm thinking he gets a shot to play with Johnny Hockey and Laine, his skill set could make that a dynamic top line.

So yeah in essence we're developing Johnson and Sillinger to take those top 2 center spots, but in the meantime we have two dynamic play making wingers in Gaudreau and Voracek who will make life easier for their centers.

The help on Defense will take longer to get here though, but with Jiricek, Mateychuk and Ceulemans coming it should be a dynamic defense in a few years.

Definitely finishing behind Tampa, Florida, Toronto, Carolina. Probably also NYR and Pittsburgh. If they take someone's spot this year it will be either Boston's or Washington's imo.

im still confused to why everyone is underrating boston so much?

debrusk was very good on that 1st line and was on a 42 goal pace with bergy and marchy per 82 gp
pasta and hall were elite once paired together and now they have krech who is a very good playmaker/passer.
swayman and ullmark are a top 6 tandem in the league
lindholm will be here for a full year
carlo and grzelcyk had down years and highly doubt it replicates again.

yes marchand and mcavoy are hurt for the first 15-20 games but no one is talking about how

florida is missing duclair almost all year, huberdeau is no longer there to carry the 2nd line and make bennett look relevant, their defence got significantly worse when they moved weegar, florida also needs to move a player still to become cap complaint

toronto still hasn't signed sandin and will most likely need to move kerfoot and holl to fit the cap so they will loose out on depth, their goalie situation got worse.

tampa lost mcdonaugh and palat that is their 5th best forward and their 2nd best dman/ also their best dman defensively

so yes boston may have some injuries to start the year but once they are healthy they are much better then they were last year, while the other 3 all got quite a bit worse over the off-season

I agree with this. The center depth is actually really good, just the 1C slot isn't dynamic. Not sure how much that matters if that person is playing between 13 and 29.

There is also no way 93 points is making a playoff spot in the East. Probably going to need 98-100.

Old and injured. Sorry your goalie tandem is not top 5 neither is your top 4. Your two best players are out for awhile and the east is brutal. Marchand is having a very risky surgery. There’s a good chance he’s never the same.
