I'd prefer Klim Kostin 5on5 over Martin Frk as well, but Frk's a Right Shot who can compete with Matthew Phillips as a potential 3rd/4th Line Power Play Specialist/Toffoli replacement

The play here would be to move Backlund in the off-season and use his money to re-sign Barbashev as his replacement and to re-sign Tarasenko as well

Huberdeau-Lindholm-Tarasenko
Mangiapane-Kadri-Barbashev
Pelletier-Backlund-Coleman
Rooney/Lucic-Dube/Ruzicka-Lewis/Frk/Kostin/Phillips

Weegar-Andersson
Zadorov-Tanev
Scandella-Meloche
Mackey/Valimaki

In my opinion Hanifin is worth more then that alone. So personally I won't do the trade for Calgary. Also for the kind of play he does for what he win I also prefer Toffoli over Tarasenko even if the Russian is more talented.

I wasn't impressed by Toffoli or Hanifin in the Playoffs. Tarasenko is an Offensive Stud and True 1RW, whereas we don't know what we'll get with Toffoli at 1RW. Barbashev just had his Breakout Season, producing Better Offensively than Toffoli and could be our Future Backlund Replacement too. Both Russians are Complete Two Way Players and True Snipers, making CGY's Offense so much more Dangerous

Scandella's getting older and he's definitely not as good as Hanifin, but he's a Big Physical Shut Down D-Man who's TOI would be sheltered playing 3rd Pairing minutes with either Zadorov, Meloche, Valimaki and/or Michael Stone at 3RD. Weegar, Andersson, Zadorov & Tanev can all eat a lot of minutes if need be and Meloche, Valimaki and/or Mackey might have their Breakout Seasons this year, so should easily replace & surpass Kylington's value to the Team. Worst Case, CGY moves Scandella in the off-season and uses his Cap Money to help re-sign both Tarasenko & Barbashev

My Biggest concern was giving up the Right Shot in Toffoli, which is why I included Frk who might be a Risk Defensively, so both Frk & Phillips would need to play sheltered 4th Line Minutes and be used as PP Specialists until either can prove they deserve more playing time and show they can be Defensively Responsible & Reliable as well

I thought you were a Calgary fan? That's terrible for Calgary!

Tarasenko is the one Calgary would be most interested in but he's a pending UFA. With some retention on Tarasenko he'd be worth trading Toffoli (who has 2 years left at a much lower AAV) for but certainly not worth Hanifin.

Scandella isn't worth trading Kylington for either, maybe Valimaki if Scandella comes with 50% retention.
Barbashev would be worth trading Kylington for but if St. Louis thinks last year wasn't an outlier they'd want more.
Frk is worthless to Calgary

IOW take out Hanifin and Frk and it's close enough to start negotiations.

We're only foregoing an extra year of Hanifin to get Tarasenko @$5.6mil with the chance to re-sign him for $40/5yrs = $8mil/yr or $45mil/6yrs = $7.5mil/yr (only $2-2.4mil/yr more next season, so use Barbashev's money to re-sign him)

Barbashev > Toffoli or Kylington. Move Backlund in the off-season + use his Cap Savings to re-sign Barbashev short-term (1-3 years @ $4.5mil), mid-term (4-5 years @$5-5.249mil/yr) or long-term (6-8yrs @$5.25-5.625mil)

For STL to take 2 D-Men, we gotta take Quebec's Scandella back who would be an ideal 3rd Pairing D-Man who can log Big Minutes if needed. Would be a good D-Partner for either Zadorov, Meloche or Valimaki at 3RD

Maybe it's an overpay, so STL adds a Pick/Prospect for Ruzicka or we ship him out elsewhere as opposed to losing him for nothing through Waivers or if they' take Valimaki + Ruzicka instead of Kylington, we ship Kylington out elsewhere, but I don't see STL moving Tarasenko for a lesser Player than Hanifin, unless they're out of the Playoff race, which isn't likely

Calgary is not going to move Hanifin for Tarasenko unless Tarasenko comes with a nice extension already in place.

Calgary is more than likely going to move Weegar back to RD. They don't want to break up the Hanifin Andersson pairing either. If Scandella somehow did wind up in Calgary he'd be on the 3rd pair with Tanev. Unless Mackey beats him out for the spot.

Hanifin - Andersson
Zadorov - Weegar
Scandella - Tanev
Mackey/Meloche

I don't really see the difference, Hanifin's contract expires 1 season after and a 1.00PPG+ Right Winger is needed more than Hanifin imo

Once Weegar re-signs for $6-6.5mil/yr, won't make sense to re-sign Hanifin for the $7-8mil/yr+ he will want to stay without going with a lowly paid forward group and that's IF Hanifin wants to stay in CGY...

We don't have to worry about resigning Hanifin yet he still has 2 years left on his contract. If he has another year like last year his trade value will be even higher next year and if he doesn't then he won't be getting 7 mil plus. It's simply not worth giving Hanifin up for a 1 year rental with a hope and a prayer the rental just might resign with us. Like I said in the first place, if Tarasenko comes with a nice extension then sure. Don't forget Calgary is going to need to resign Lindholm in 2 years too.

Besides Calgary already has enough older players signed long term for big money to be worrisome about the future. Taking on yet another long term big money older player would probably turn out very badly soon.

As a pure rental Tarasenko would be a great add but not if it costs us Hanifin.

I'd definitely prefer Tarasenko come with an extension and I'd prefer to give up Valimaki & Kylington over Hanifin, but I wonder if Kylington can replace Hanifin and if Tarasenko would help us win a Championship more than Hanifin can is what it really comes down too. And yes, i get not wanting to break up the entire team, including D-Pairings with chemistry already established.
