Description
Avs get a guy that can hopefully bridge the gap to Newhook. He's a bit overpaid, but he'd be a great fit in the middle six. If the team can't afford to keep him, then perhaps he's flipped after the year.

Kraken get a guy they will likely look to extend in Compher, and NHL ready prospect in Kaut, and another first to help them continue to build from the ground up.

My guess is that Seattle is not looking to move Gourde, as they have certainly looked at him as one of their leaders, but perhaps they'll start to want to roll with the youngsters sooner than anticipated.

this is a very fair trade for both teams I think that the avs really need some more center depth and this add that. Also the kraken get fair value for gourde and get more depth and a pick

Thanks for the feedback. I was starting to think this post was going to get lost in the shuffle.

Don’t get me wrong he’s a nice player but he isn’t Kaut a 1st and $1.6M more in cap space better than Compher.

I think it's debatable. He's better than Compher at almost everything. And I did add a third in a deep draft coming back to Colorado. Kaut is probably worth around that third, so it's kinda like a first to upgrade Compher to Gourde.

It's a pretty steep price, but it might be worth it.

I think Seattle says no here as they probably value him as the leader of the team, even if they have to slide him to the wing in a year or two with Beniers and Wright. However, value seems quite fair, maybe throw in a bit more Seattle's way since Gourde has 3 years left, but I'd say its pretty close on value.

My other worry for this team would be the money Newhook and Byram would want even on bridge deals, and if they'd be able to get both of the aforementioned players back plus Meyers (if he plays well) with just the money coming off of Johnson's contract. Also MacKinnon is the obvious one but I'd have to imagine Colorado would be getting him back no matter what.

The value of a 1st rd pick in the NHL is astronomically higher than than any other pick and trades that try to balance it out that way are really kidding themselves. The odds a draft pick outside of the 1st rd becoming an NHL player is comically low, it’s part of the reason Sakic refused to trade them as GM until getting caught out of the goalie loop in 21. Throw in the Avs absolute inability to get players out of non 1st rd picks and it’s just emphasizes the point. I mean guys like Bjorkstrand and Pacciorety were basically given away (yeah I know it was cap moves) so why be the team that over pays for a 40pt player. I mean I could see the justification if he were say a $3M player but if it’s me I’m not trading a 1st for him on top of Compher. No thanks.

And his 3 year term is a deal killer as well with Mac/Byram/Newhook up for new deals.
