If Out at the TDL

Created by: bluspy88
Team: 2022-23 Seattle Kraken
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 13, 2022
Published: Sep. 13, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
SEA
  1. Kaut, Martin
  2. 2025 2nd round pick (COL)
COL
  1. Soucy, Carson ($1,325,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I am assuming there is an injury that would spur this move, say EJ, Byram, Girard as they have all missed significant time before. Obviously if they are all healthy, its likely they move him somewhere else.
2.
SEA
  1. White, Colin
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
I used a third though I could see it being a 2nd should Donskoi have a better season. Also, I could see a few different players being moved to make the cap work: White, Hornqvist, and maybe Balcers with corresponding moves. For this, I just am going to use White.
FLA
  1. Donskoi, Joonas ($1,950,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I think Donskoi could thrive in a place with high end talent around him, such as he did in Colorado. I will also assume that White doesn't rebound enough to justify keeping him in Florida, and that Florida makes another move for the cap space. I imagine for the regular season you could run lines like this with daily face off as guidance:

Verhaeghe-Barkov-Tkachuk
Balcers(?)-Bennett-Reinhart
Cousins-Lundell-Donskoi
Lomberg-Luostarinen-Hornqvist

I suppose its possible that Donskoi moves up and switches with Balcers. Its also very plausible that Balcers is traded rather than White, but that would likely require many other moves on top of that.
3.
SEA
  1. 2024 5th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
I went with Toronto here simply due to Matt Murray's injury history and their other struggles in recent years with goalie depth/health. This would be very similar to the Rittich move. I also considered Washington, Vegas, and Pittsburgh as teams that have had previous issues with goalie health that affected their seasons last year.
TOR
  1. Jones, Martin ($1,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Obviously Jones is only getting moved to a team that is desperate for goalie help and in contention IF he has a good year. He had an ok year last year, and that wasn't enough in this cap strapped world to spend picks on him. So, just to reiterate, this move is very hypothetical where a very injured playoff team needs him and he has been at least .905 or better.

Even with an injury to one of those guys(though Girard missing time with a freak injury doesn’t make him injury prone) I think COL either goes in house for a guy to fill or goes the discount rack not a bigger priced item like that. I think the value is kinda high on Soucy but given what Chiarot got at the deadline what do I know.

Just to be clear: I only said that they have missed time before, which is true. Also, while I get your point about "in house", literally every fan base says that about replacements. I remember in the offseason before it happened there were a lot of Burns to Carolina posts, including myself and all I heard was "they have 3 guys in the AHL that can step into that role immediately". Plus, Colorado already has done this move before in Manson. So, I just disagree with you that they wouldn't get a good player for their defense which was and always is huge to winning. The point about the price is fair, but I compare Soucy more to Kulak in terms of what they would give up. Chiarot was playing like top pair minutes and didn't suck which inflated his value, Soucy is the #3 LHD in Seattle.

The Avs traded a 5th for washed up Dubnyk one year, and the leafs gave up more than that to get Rittich so I'll go ahead and disagree. Not to mention all the extreme qualifiers I put in front of it.

Rittich was actually an ok backup when traded and Dubnyk was also a vessel to help dump Paytern.
and the extreme qualifiers are just a boost for the no one is gonna be that desperate part, especially the leafs since that would mean they have 3 goalies injured

I think the big thing is they did the move last year to get manson like you said but they kept him. so currently they have 5 top4 d. I don't see them scratching johnson for soucy to play bottom pairing minutes and they won't be able to resign him so that pulls colorado back quite a bit. So they will either bring someone up or move a late piick(5-7) to bring in a player who can be a health scratch and play 7 minutes a night like Jack Johsnon did last year, but they won't be giving a 2nd and a prospect for a bottom pairing rental.

If one of those guys missed time they still have 5 top 4 pairing capable dmen, and a guys like MacDonald and Little Z in the AHL, a 6th guy with those 5 is playing maybe 10 minutes a game, no special teams, just don’t see COL using their limited draft capital for guy that plays that little. Now if 2 of them got hurt that’s a different story but COL has the best defense in the league and arguably a top 3 with one of those guys out simply because the top end guys are so good.

A 2nd + B prospect seems fair for Soucy, and would be in line with Manson's return of 2nd+ Helleson. Soucy isn't as good as Manson but his caphit would be lower so that seems fair. Maybe the prospect would be slightly les valuable than a RHD like Helleson but that ballpark is appropriate. The market will always dictate value though, like Chiarot as you said.

I wasn’t really balking at the price in that scenario for a 6th dman I don’t see them paying that price. Manson was acquired to be a top 4 guy that kills penalties, Soucy is not particularly good at any thing, other than getting posterized by MacKinnon, and he wouldn’t be a top 4 guy I was saying no to the price based on that.

I agree. Probably won't be an Avs target since they resigned Manson
