AHL Call-up order

Created by: Richard88

Description
The Avs 21 man roster looks pretty set, and they likely roll with 21 as much as possible since MacDermid can cover both 13F and 7D. Beyond that there's a lot of competition for callups. The lines listed below (under Scratches/IR/LTIR and Taxi squad) are more or less the order I'd expect players to get called up in, by position.

Can Olausson’s ELC slide? I think Bowers is more likely than Sampo, and I’d move up young guys over Megna and Hudon but the Avs won’t. Pretty accurate, good job.

Yeah I'd rather younger guys get looks instead of Megna and Hudon, but that's not how the Avs have tended to operate. They usually promise some of those AHL vets a handful of NHL games too.

Not sure about Olausson. He played juniors in North America so maybe he's not treated like a Euro like Kaut was. Or maybe he is, I don't know.

the hard part of bringing up young guys right now is that we're pretty deep up front. Any young guy brought up is going to see the 6-7 mins a night and that pointless for them. They can't get into a game and be effective with that kind of ice time not to mention being set in a role spot on 4th line most likely. Unless we have multiple injuries we won't see any young guns this season

Of the young guys I would bet they'll be most keen to give Foudy a couple of games when an opportunity arises, if only to give him a taste of NHL action so he can get an idea of what he needs to work on. Two games at the start of the year would do him well, just like they did with Timmins and Barron.

But that’s the problem the organization has, they aren’t playing the roles they’ll play with the Avs in the AHL. I’ll take a more talented less experienced guy every day, and maybe now that they’ve won a cup they’ll give those guys more of a shot but probably not.🤷‍♂️

Yes he's slide eligible. I think he'll have every opportunity to get 5-9 games but nothing more. That slide could be valuable.

I don’t know about that. Timmins and Barron were the guys that made it to the final cut on merit and I don’t see Foudy doing that. I could see them giving Olausson 10 games and giving him top 6 time. I think the team would love it if Kaut or Maltsev forced it the issue and allowed them to rotate Cogs and Helm to keep them fresher for the playoffs.

Foudy had a very good playoffs and with his skating he's probably viewed highly by the front office as someone who can suit the Avs systems and style. He's still quite young though so there's no rush.

Olausson hasn't really looked that great since being drafted, and has a lot to work on defensively. This will also be his first pro season so I'd be surprised if they give him anything more than maybe 2-3 games tops.

Maltsev and Kaut are probably the guys who need to be making impacts in camp and it would be nice if they did. Realistically though the Avs roster already has 21 players on one-way deals and they'll want to maximise cap for the TDL and bonuses, so it would be surprising if either of them don't get waived in a few weeks.

I know they like Foudy, I could see him getting games toward the middle and end of the season because no matter how much they like him they aren’t counting on him this year, and having to figure out the 2C/3C means guys like Meyers, Maltsev are going to get that look in the preseason, zero knock on him just don’t think it’s his time just yet. Olausson was almost a ppg player in his NA transition year, has an NHL shot now and is a good skater, I don’t know how you think he hasn’t looked well, but 90% of offensive young forwards have things to work on defensively.

Agree a 100% about Kaut and Maltsev, though The only time a one way deal really matters is when it’s over $1M, unless you have cheap owners.

$1m and a 22nd roster player Vs a 21 man roster is the difference between $2.5m and $1.5m in capspace to cover bonuses. If they carry 22 that means they are risking overages next year which is not ideal.

I think it is a given they won’t carry 22 for an extended time. I do think the E-Rod signing blocks everybody with Meyers getting 1st shot. I do think Maltsev and Kaut not being waiver exempt is going to effect some decisions as I could see either of them being claimed.

There are a lot of teams who will be running 20 or 21 man rosters out of necessity who literally won't have the capspace on opening night to claim someone who they'd have to carry for at least 30 days, so there won't be many teams making claims.

Smaller rosters will also mean that we will see more good players on waivers than usual too.

As such I think there's a good chance that the Avs can sneak their guys through, unless an Arizona or Buffalo prefers Kaut or Maltsev over other guys.

Avs are probably going to avoid making claims so that they can bank as much capspace as possible early on, but if a really nice player becomes available on waivers they do have the flexibility to take them on (especially if there's a preseason injury). It would likely have to be someone they *really* like though to be worth taking a roster spot. Someone like Zetterlund from NJ for example, or PO Joseph from Pittsburgh.

That all said, I think we could see a prospect swap trade involving Kaut when he and the player he gets traded for has passed through waivers. That would allow the Avs to pickup someone they like but without needing to keep them up in the NHL for 30 days before sending them down again.
