Weegs Extension

Created by: Connys_Cucks
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 15, 2022
Published: Sep. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Elliotte reporting the Weegar extension will likely come in at 8x$6.5. I think that's tremendous value for a top 15 D-man in the game. I wouldn't even be slightly suprised to find Weegar is our best defenceman by year-end.

The 2019 version of Tyler Myers is crying in his sleep. Imagine the money Benning would have thrown at him. A tragedy indeed

Great value for Calgary, Weegar probably could've come in around 7 x 7 or 7 x 7.5 very likely.

For eight years, that term might come to bite CGY in the end, but damn a $6.5M cap hit is nice.

Wait until its official, but my immediate reaction is good signing.

I'm not so ready to say CGY is a better team post-Tkachuk than they were before (including with JG), but hot damn if they are not making a strong case, particularly if Mangiapane can show he's got another level.

No it won't, cap will be over 100M by then and Calgary won't be contending. Only way it happens if if Calgary spends the next 6 years continuing to hand out big long term contracts to aging players like San Jose did. Calgary has essentially given themselves a legitimate 2-5 year window if this deal goes through

Slight correction, while Weegar is very good he is probably ranked closer to 20th than 15th.

It's a great signing. Seems fair both ways. Not sure where this "top 15 Dman in the league" is coming from.

I would put him in the top 50 safely. Just ball parking though.

Weegar may have made the dumbest play off all time in the playoffs against TB in Game 2 and made several in that series that made one go WTF was he thinking. Had an awful awful series.

Yeah but you are low on him despite him being an analyitics gem both offensively and defensively. Not worth arguing with you on this subject

Thats fine. He will probably be paired with Tanev the best shutdown defensman in the entire league. He's still elite despite his occasional blunder and Flames fans are used to them from Brodie

No I am just realistic about him. He's good. Not top 20 in the league but still very good. Offence was up last year and defence was down. War in general went down. But is still in the 90th percentile. You will see when he plays. I think he will do very well in Calgary. Especially if he is getting healthy pp time. Sutter just may turn him into a top 20 Dman in the league. But it won't happen overnight.

I'm hoping for $45mil/7 years = $6.43mil/yr or $50mil/8 years = $6.25mil/yr, but $6.5mil/yr x 7-8 years is definitely acceptable too

Figured this was coming

Calgary should then look at moving Kylington for a winger.

To bad Nashville got McDonagh as then I would say something like Trenin or Tolvanen for him

Well considering this is where he ranked the last 2 seasons I would say he is very easily top 3 in that category

Hedman is not a shutdown defensman even if he is still good at it. Dont act like im suddenly not a Tampa fan, I own an autographed Hedman jersey

I like Trenin too. Some other Potential Targets in no particular order might be Puljujarvi, Kapanen, Gurianov, Comtois, McBain, Zetterlund, Tyce Thompson & Luke Kunin or CGY adds for Marchessault, Barbashev, Verhaghe, Duclair, Garland, Bjorkstrand or Sharangovich

WTF does having an autographed jersey mean? Does my having a Bobby Lou stick make me a Panthers fan ?

I don't remember responding to you. But if it's really that hard for you to think you can click on my profile where it clearly says "2nd favorite team - Tampa Bay"
