Solving the Sandin Conundrum

Description
Not a Leafs fan, but thought I'd take a stab at solving the puzzle Toronto finds itself in.

I do think the Leafs should hang onto Sandin and find a way to sign him. Even though he is still more potential than production right now, he can still contribute and is part of a young core that will keep the Leafs competitive into the future. It might seem like they have too many LD now, but that won't really be the case in a couple of years once Giordano and Muzzin are gone. I used Durzi's deal as a template for the sort of bridge contract Sandin might receive.

Of course, part of the problem is Toronto's distinct lack of cap space. Most CapFriendly scenarios involve Kerfoot and/or Holl being shipped out. However, with the flat cap neither player will likely return much, so at this point they have more value to the Leafs than anyone else. And while Toronto won't have a LD logjam in the near future, in the present they do. That to me makes Muzzin the most sensible choice when it comes to clearing cap space. If they move him, they'll have the ability to carry a full 23 man roster and give them a fighting chance at retaining Bunting and/or some of their other free agents next summer.

As for the trade, I picked Detroit largely because they're the only team I could find that both has cap room and are trying to win. That means there may be at least a chance Muzzin is willing to go there. I think Muzzin is going to cost serious draft capital to move given his contract and rough season last year, but his defensive capabilities and off-ice impact might interest a young improving team like the Red Wings.

I'm open to feedback on this! Is this something either the Leafs or Red Wings consider? What do you think Toronto does to get under the cap before the season? Let me know!

Any concept of dumping Muzzin is not a solution since he has a full No Trade Clause

Sandin is a lot better then Lily imo, but with him being a dick and wanting more money well he should’ve signed by now and took whatever he gotten

You have no idea if the situation with Sandin has anything to do with money.

It is money and also I don’t think really wants to be scratched or even wanting to play on the third pairing

With the current roster the LHD side is signed for the next two years. Why would he want to sign here when he is and nhler and needs experience. He could definitly be a top 4 D next year if he develop this year.
I'm a Leafs fan but can we blame a kid that just wants to be in the lineup??

I know alot of Detroit fans would say no but I would take that if I'm Detroit, obviously Muzzin would need to waive. Maybe Toronto trades for Oesterle and the 4th for a 1st and 3rd then Toronto puts Muzzin on waivers and Detroit claims him? Don't know if that could be a thing or not.

I'd take on Muzzin's contract for a 1st but it has it to be the 2023 1st.
Toronto's late 2023 1st likely wouldn't crack the Wings Roster until 2025-2026. A 2024 1st pushes that even further down the line.
I'm fine to accept a top 16 protected pick so that if Toronto by some chance doesn't make the playoffs they could choose to defer.

There is no rush to get to the line up as fast as possible. Wings should be very good in 25-26 and adding a good player who is still on his ELC would be huge.

Wings haven't made the playoffs in 6 years. Good chance 7 after this season. There are no guarantees they will be very good by 2025-26. Prospects who can come earlier that 2027 are needed to accelerate re-build.

2023 1st top 16 protected is the demand OR a it's a fully unprotected 2024 1st and Detroit signs some goons to take out Matthews and Marner's knees that year lol. (Relax Laugh fans it's a joke)

There are so many prospects who are making the team before 2027. So many.
