I feel like what Edmonton needs is defensive depth, so trading for a piece like Hajek and getting a 2023 pick is definitely worth the somewhat steep price.
After all, we all know that McDavid and Draisaitl are two of the worst defensive players in the league, you'll never win a cup with those two as your top 2 centers. Instead, I've picked out two great defensive centers to fill those roles, newly acquired elite back to back cup winner Barclay Goodrow and Gregory McKeggory, relying on the wingers to prove the scoring.
Additional, Philip Broberg would probably work well as a forward, as he's got some offensive talent but also brings defensive capabilities to the forward group, something that's sorely needed. In the same vein, Trouba will provide a scoring touch to the forward group, while also being defensively responsible.
This team does lack some of the scoring brought by McDavid and Draisaitl, but makes up for it by providing defensive prowess in front of Campbell, including Cody Ceci, a defensive genius, as the number 1 defenseman and the newly acquired Hajek, who provides some youth and scoring. Furthermore, RNH wouldn't fit in the forward group, so I bought out his contract to fit under the cap.
Now, the joker in my mind is Ryan Reaves. He has shown a lot of talent in the past and has a pretty competent shot, so I feel like he could easily blossom on such a talented roster. He has some chemistry with McJesus (Kegger) already, so
I know what you're saying, if the Oilers had traded for McKegg from the Rangers earlier, they probably wouldn't have needed to give up so many picks, McDavid and Draisaitl might've been enough, but that doesn't mean it's not still worth trading those two. They definitely get a lot of value through this trade. Bouchard was a painful decision, but there's just not room for a less experienced defenseman on such a defensively minded roster. Players like Ceci provide a lot more experience and a defensive-first mentality.
