Hayton isn’t worth a fraction of that. Hagel had more goals than Hayton had points. Hayton is basically Tyson Jost, would you give up that package Jost? Hayton was over drafted, has under performed and I wouldn’t trade Ranta for him straight up.

Banking on a team making a bad trade just because a other team made a bad trade isnt a great strategy

Just offersheet him with a front-loaded deal. Poverty franchise wouldn't be able to match.

Ranta + 2 1sts could get a legit top 6 forward, why waste those assets on a struggling prospect?

Honestly I wouldn’t even criticize the Hagel trade. TBL needed to add a forward and someone who is mad cheap. They got both.

I get the trade from the Lightning side, they were back to back champs, hagel has the potential is the right age and he has a good cheap contract with term.
But they still over paid significantly, but then rich people over pay for things all the time but they can take the hit

I suppose Hayton could show improvement. Avs can't afford an expensive top six F; they'll have to look for value players.

Hayton is neither a top six forward or a player who shows signs of improvement lol

You're right, Avs need value players. But spending their best trade assets on questions marks isn't getting value.

This is a 23-24 roster. After one whole season a lot can change. If it's not BH, could be Lundestrom, Wahlstrom, or someone similar.

You signed Newhook to play 2C for 2023-24 for 3.5M. If he continues his ascension from last year through this year and beyond THAT is a value player.

Probably won’t be any of those guys tbh. Wahlstrom isn’t going to be worth that unless he takes a HUGE step forward. And tbh I doubt the isles would want to send him somewhere he’s basically guaranteed to figure it out lol. Lunderstrom isn’t going to be worth that either.

Both AN and BB will have to take bridge deals. Avs have taken it slow with AN, I imagine to avoid a Jost repeat. I suspect his 2C opportunity in 22-23 will get cut into by ER; this has the added benefit of capping AN's pts totals, giving him less ammo to resist a cheaper, one year bridge.

Byram is the guy who could really explode, but COL can also limit his regular season mins, justified by wanting to avoid a 3rd concussion. BB COULD demand a big raise, but there's no Arb, and he sees Toews here w only 1yr left. Taking a 1yr bridge is a nice setup in 24-25 for BB to slide into that #2 D spot, be the man, and get a huge deal as the cap takes off.

IF they were to overpay for someone in the vein of the Hagel trade, it could be someone like Gourde with 50% retention. It can't be someone you just hope figures it out.

That's fine, but with this roster a year out there has to be some projection. Gourde half retained might be too expensive. I'm thinking about an under $2M RFA with multiple cheap years remaining.

Hayton showed improvement last season in his production rates and his two way play - the value in Hayton would be if Colorado traded for him right now and signed him to a 1.5-1.75 mill 3-4 year contract. Hagel was only worth the price TB paid for him because his salary his 1.5 mill for 3 seasons.

Wahlstrom is a pretty safe bet for 20+ goals next season which means on a bridge he’d command at least 3 mill and the isles also have no interest in trading one of their only dynamic forwards.

Besides starting with the letter H the 2 players have nothing in common.

I think this is a good opportunity to really think about the differences and learn a lot about how trades work in the NHL.

I thought the H means they're the same everything?

What kind of substance are you on to think that Hagel is a comparable for Hayton? Dissapointing players who are struggling do not fetch 2 first round picks... Avs counter with Jean-Luc Foudy for 3 first round picks
