Rangers handled the situation well, but I’m not sure why anyone is shocked by this. Guys on their ELC are usually not traded for draft picks that r significantly lower than where the guy was originally drafted.

Ottawa getting Hakanpaa as a result would be so dope, but I can't imagine that'll happen

I’ve never really seen a trade like this before, ur logic doesn’t make sense though. If a guy who hasn’t proven anything is drafted 15th, should he be worth a ~15th round pick? No. He hasn’t proven enough at the nhl level to warrant this type of return

He’s a former first round pick who is very highly thought of. Guys on their ELC’s very rarely get traded for less than their draft slot just a few years after being drafted.

MTL got a 1st for Chiarot. The world doesn't always make sense.

Paying a 1st is still bad for a guy who barely played in the nhl come on man how are u arguing me on this

I’m not saying whether or not it’s a good idea. I’m saying it wasn’t shocking. He was a former first round pick, he’s highly thought of and he has two years of control left….

Haakanpaa for lundkvist would’ve made more sense, not a 1st rounder, I have to say it was pretty shocking. I wouldn’t have paid more than a 2nd

I’m not saying I would’ve either — but I just saw Romanov get traded for a first….

Nils wasn’t bad and considering he was paired with Nemeth he didn’t have much help. Schneider just happened to be better in the half a season he got and more of the shutdown guy NYR needed. If he was a LHD he would be staying put. If he was with Muzzin or Gio he would look great in TOR

Every year, almost every team pays a 1st for a guy that has never played in the NHL.

If Dallas thinks Lunqvist is NHL ready, it's a good trade for Dallas. Plus he does have two more years on a cheap ELC.

I mean he’s probably the extra guy out with that d core, so give us a mid pick and we’ll call it a day.

You all can rationalize this any way you want, but I agree with OP's original statement. RIGHT NOW this feels like a massive overpay. The potential for positivity in hindsight is irrelevant. I'm not gonna complain, though. When a legitimate contender that is up against the cap can get 1ST ROUND PICKS with VERY favorable conditions for an unproven player, it only makes the trade market that much more exciting to watch unfold.
