How do they get out of the mushy middle

Created by: Knuckl3s
Team: 2022-23 Nashville Predators
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 20, 2022
Published: Sep. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This isn't exactly a young team. Yeah, they have some bright up and comers, but by the time those young guns become even close to the finished product, the vets will be older and past their prime. Hence the title

I do suppose that Sarros is poised to walk at the end of his current deal with Askarov on the way up

They even thought about rebuilding that summer they traded Ellis away then seemingly changed their mind for some reason. Should've kept blowing it up in my opinion. Could've been in good position to land Bedard.

Poile calls it a "competitive transition" which after witnessing how things went under the previous Canuck regime, I don't think there is any such thing in this league. There is only a limbo of mediocrity. Dallas looks like they're gonna be stuck there for the foreseeable future, St. Louis might be headed that way as well, Minnesota is waiting out their storm. It's not a bad thing for a team's core to age out and then bottom out from a results standpoint. If anything, one might call it a blessing as it promotes smooth means of transitioning between phases in the competitive cycle.

I don't think trading Ellis was indication of consideration to rebuild, I think they legitimately were hoping that Phillipe Myers could become an impact player with a change of scenery, but that experiment obviously didn't work out. Next thing you know they're paying a 2nd rounder for Jeremy Lauzon lol

I see most of the central division, Nashville, Dallas, Minnesota, Winnipeg, and st. Louis (until they won) in the same light as San Jose before they traded away pavelski. Solid team that could make the playoffs any given year. Nobody's really afraid of facing them but one year they get hot and make a deep run. St Louis is the only one that stayed hot and won it all. All of them are more likely a 2nd round exit most years.

David Poile somehow has kept his job for 23 years with the mushy middle.(or worse) Seven playoff round wins in that time. Haven't won a playoff round in five years.
Right now, being in the weak Central division and Western Conference kinda guarantees a playoff spot. The owners (and fans) seem to quite happy with that.

They need to get rid of Johansen. Terrible contract.

Put up 63 points last season, how much is he really overpaid by, a million to 1.5, its not that big of an issue.

I think the only way for the Preds to get out of the mushy middle is to have a young player like Tomasino or Tolvanen take a huge step forward.

Last season the Preds top four forwards all had solid seasons and they got good depth scoring, if any of RyJo, Duch, Gran or Forsberg struggle it could be a rough season for Nashville.

I think most would agree that he's due for some regression offensively this coming season

The likelyhood of RyJo and Duch "struggling" or coming back to Earth a little seems pretty realistic to me

Hold on a sec, the Central division is now weak? I will admit that the ceiling has lowered a bit, but outside of Chicago and Arizona, the division still looks very competitive. I'd say 6 competitive teams in a division pretty reasonably qualifies as a frenzy more or less

The central was strong when it was basically guaranteed they'd have 5 playoff teams every year and the pacific had no chance at a wild card spot. Now it seems pretty realistic that the central might only have 3 playoff teams. Colorado and 2 of the other very average teams. The central definitely isn't the power house it used to be.

Probably not, but I think suggesting that the Pacific might get both wild card spots is a stretch. I don't think the balance of power has shifted that much

Vegas (if injuries don't kill them again), Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and LA could very reasonably all make the playoffs. And if Anaheim takes another step forward they could be in the mix. Only Colorado is guaranteed a playoff spot for the central.

Anaheim still has a ways to go before they get back to playoff contention. Their start to last season was very much a mirage. I can see one wildcard spot going to each division, so if I had to pick one competitive team out of the pacific to miss the playoffs, I think it would be Vegas. At the same time, watching their management and ownership group react to the team missing the playoffs for a 2nd consecutive year when they think they're suppose to be a favorite contending for the cup will be nothing short of comical

Idk if they'd be as shocked to miss the playoffs this year now that they don't have a starting goalie. When will teams learn to stick with fleury. Pit would look a lot more consistent with flower and Vegas should've never doubted flower.

I think they're pretty happy with what they have in Tristan Jarry over in the Burgh
