1. This is one way of compensating MacKinnon for taking the ultra-cheap contract that he signed back in 2016.

2. The last time Connor McDavid won a Stanley Cup?

Never.

Vote yes.

I mean good deal considering he’s been on pace for 100+ points the past few seasons AND he’s our franchise center. Obviously not team friendly but considering he’s won his cup it makes sense for him to go for the money.

To anyone saying bad deal, what choice do we have? Let him walk in free agency? All things considered he probably could’ve gotten even more on the open market.

They were smart to do it now, may have cost COL an extra million a year or so next offseason if he has another dominant year this year.

Reminder :

Nobody signs team-friendly contracts ; they just sign bad deals and afterwards argue it's a team-friendly team for PR

and anyway, this is a good deal ; 100% of GMs would take that

Oh yeah I don’t doubt it was the right move. With the cap going up in a few years I think it will be a good deal again (I think it’s fair value right now)

What happened to his team-first mentality?

considering he signed less % of the cap than expected, this a discount still

Its neither good (Team friendly) nor bad (Overpay). Its fair. Thats all you can hope for. He deserves every penny of that and any GM would be glad to give it to him.

It's...a lot, and always some concern signing guys well into their 30's, but Mac has been an elite-level C for on five years now.

Helps that COL essentially already has its core locked down for the near future (Makar, Landeskog, Rantanen, Nichuskin, Lehkonen, etc.). I think by the time someone like Miko or Cale needs an extension and a pay raise, the cap should be at a spot where they can get one done, particularly if it goes up as much as expected in 2-3 years.

Might create trouble filling out/ significantly adding to the roster, but COL should be able to make it work.

And so it begins.
The first of the crazy contracts are done. Expect AM to surpass this soon, followed by McDavid soon after.

It's a little high for right now, but the cap should increase fast enough to keep up with the contract.

When healthy, he's worth every penny. Will he stay healthy for most of this contract, or will he be beset by injuries? I love MacKinnon, but he's a little bit prone to nagging injuries.

Oof. I didn't notice that. This is buy-out proof, so if does deal with injuries that just slows his game down, they will have to give away a lot to dump him to a tanking team.

He's not even close to on one now, but how about when Kevin Labanc signed a 1x$1M deal a few years back after a 56 point season?

He should be firing his agent for a contract like that.

very good deal, Mack gets his money and the Avs lock their generational center, AAV may seem a bit high now but with the cap expected to go up by a decent amount in the coming years, should play out just fine

Beautiful contract and signed for 8 years while Matthews signed for 5 years

Lol, 8 years isn't optimal for the team at his age. I'm sure Sakic would have rather had 6 years. But I don't expect you to understand that.

So much for the discount and team friendly deal all the Avs fans were saying he'd take.

He definitely deserves this contract though.
