I'm surprised people seem to think this isn't a fair deal or that he wanted all the money's. I was expecting him to get more if he wanted fair market value. 13.5-14 mil
This is almost exactly equal to Toews and Kane's extensions as percent of cap. This isn't some super discount but it isn't him trying to get every last cent he could
Love seeing people complain "b-but it's not team friendly..." when he's taken paycuts before and now wants what he's worth. Like people are conditioned to expect players to take less money every time like Marchand and Bergeron, while ignoring context of those situations.
It's Nathan MacKinnon. It's worth it, especially with the cap jumping up in a few years. He can be great for the majority of this contract, barring wild injury.
It's commonly known that they offered $13.25M and he moved it down a notch. It was on Twitter at the time, don't recall who.
I mean I don't want to come across as an asshole, but I find that hard to believe. I'd expect the league's upcoming best player to want to be paid the most. Plus, he was an RFA.

Well, I don't know how credible this source is, but here you go.

He didn't take a pay cut before. He was coming off a 21 goal, 52 point season and signed for an adjusted $7.2M. That wasn't a discount at the time.

The Avs won the Cup in part because of MacKinnon's great contract. Before it was all about the team, this guy talked about taking a discount and look at what Makar did.
Now as their players turn into mercenaries their dynasty will end.

I agree. They lost several significant players this summer and this contract doesn't start for another year. More shoes to drop.
Toews & Kane won 3 Cups, but since their big $10.5M deals kicked in they haven't won a single playoff round.
Unless the talent is transcendent, it can't overcome the lack of team depth resulting from massive legacy contracts in the cap era.
-Mackinnon is good, but I wouldn't say he's worth more then McDavid. If the avs win a few more cups. I'd say this is worth it right away. But if they don't, I'm going to call it a huge overpay.
As soon as he won his cup I knew he wasnt making less than McDavid
As for record breaking contract it holds till AM 16mill x 8 year deal and than whenever Draisaitl gets grabbed via FA
He did though, McDavids CH% is 16.67%, Nate's is 15.27%, he actual did to a little bit of a discount.
The back couple years of this contract could be rough, $12.6 milly cap hit in years 7 & 8 maybe brutal. You had to sign in but this maybe a tough one down the road.

1,000%, I can all kinds of hate whenever I point that out from fans but it is the truth. It is incredibly hard to win paying multiple players $10,000,000 and up annually.
