Description
Just getting an idea for the Avs cap situation next year with MacKinnon at 12.6M

Didnt put much time into the UFA signings but Johansson, Carpenter, and Smith are all in the later stages of their careers and havent won anything yet. Doesnt have to be those guys specifically but the idea is to find cheap vet players who take discounts for a chance to win. Its also tough to predict performance for older players so obviously if these guys regress heavily the Avs should sign someone else

I didnt feel like looking up the QOs for a lot of RFAs so I just did 850k for now cause thats in the ballpark

Assuming Bowers and Kaut get claimed on waivers or are traded in a prospect swap deal, but either way that doesnt impact the NHL roster here so I didnt show it. I also didnt show any reserve list signings even though they may happen

You really think it'll be G over Manson? Feel like it'll be the other way around

I went back and forth on this right before I posted, but ended up choosing Girard. Itll be one of those 2 imo, probably depends on their performance next season

Manson has a full NTC until the following year. I'll post mine in a minute.

If Newhook and Byram earn those spots, then they're not signing those contracts. Either less term or more money.

It really depends on how they perform next season but I dont think this is far off. Dobson just scored over 50 points while playing 21.5 mins per game and signed 3x4M, I think thats a pretty good comparable for Byram if he plays well. The lines can be shuffled around but I just put Byram with Makar since Girard didnt pair well with Byram last year while Toews did

For Newhook we dont know if he or Rodrigues will be the 2C yet so its tough to say how he will produce. I based this on Hintz's 3x3.15M deal after he scored 46P in 85GP (reg+playoffs) the previous year. I think Newhook will produce at roughly the same rate

Dobson isn't a top-pair D-man 5v5 with NYI, you have Byram as a top-pair guy. The bigger one though is that the market has shifted for young centers since Hintz's contract (which was too low anyways). You're probably looking at the Kotkaniemi, Dach, Bennett, Eriksson EK, etc. contracts as a comparable if he's going to be relied on as 2C/3C guy.

You are looking at the lineup the season after they sign. Just because I put Byram on the top pair in 23-24 doesnt mean he will be a top pair D in 22-23. And Dobson actually had the highest TOI/GP on the Isles, higher than both Pulock and Pelech last year

Same with Newhook - Maybe he will be a 3C in 22-23, sign his extension, and then be put as the 2C when Rodrigues leaves. Plus all of the C comparables you listed were longer term deals. This is a 3 year bridge deal so it will have a lower AAV. Kotkaniemi and JEE signed 8 years, while Dach and Bennett signed 4 years

Dobson had a higher TOI because he got PP assignments, he was very clearly not the top D-man.

Even if Newhook is a 3C, he'd be a 3C former 1st round pick going for a bridge that keeps him an RFA. Assuming he justifies that spot, that's not going to be a 3 mil AAV, its probably going be in the 3.5 to 4.5 mil at best. And potentially more.

Ehhh - his TOI compared to Pulock is close enough at even strength that its pretty much a wash - Pulock averaged a whole 8 seconds more per game at 5v5, is it really worth it to split hairs like that? At the end of the day he played 21.5 mins per game and scored 51 points, then signed for 3x4M. I think thats a pretty good comparable for Byram if he continues to play like he did last year

I dont think draft position has as big of an impact as you are suggesting. By 2023 Newhooks draft will be 4 years ago with 2 pro seasons under his belt - you pay for performance, not draft position. If Newhook scores around 45 points in 22-23 then that puts him in a pretty similar spot to Hintz who was also on pace for 45 points the year before he signed 3x3.15M (and who was also a top prospect who signed a 3 year bridge that kept him an RFA). Obviously it depends on how he performs in 22-23, but I dont think 3x3 is completely unrealistic or anything
