Canes would probably do this if they didn’t have a salary cap to worry about. Gardiner is expected to be on LTIR the entire season now and this trade puts the Canes in a major cap bind with the beginning of camp looming

There are worse places to go. Plus, CHI would flip him at the deadline for picks, with retention.

Winnipeg taking pennies on the dollar or worse isn't a re-tool.

We'd be out of retention slots this year so would have to be next season. I just don't see Wheeler wanting to go to a team that's tanking despite Chicago being a top 5 place to play in the NHL with all the lavish facilities and huge fan base.

I understand that. Wheeler wants a chance at a cup, but if he decides he can't win one in WPG, he would take his chances to waive to CHI or another team just to get out of WPG, hoping for greener pastures.

Dont see the improvement here and your barely aquiring anything. Not even worth phone bill to get these deals done.

Why send him to Chicago then? Why not just trade him from Winnipeg?

Unless Winnipeg is retaining half on Dillon, that’s an easy no from the Canes.
