Not a Canucks fan, but Pearson for Dillon seems to be the most rewarding

I was about to say the same. Pearson is useful, but old. Hoglander is young and is worth keeping around. Garland is on such an efficient contract that we would need a defensemen who is on a similar deal in return - not one on an expiring deal. Pearson for Dillon might be in the Jets' favour, I think a small addition on their end would be appropriate; however, they are probably in greater need of keeping Dillon, than they are in need of a middle six winger.

I don't like the garland-severson trade and I don't think trading hogs for a ld is a smart idea. So pearson for dillon is the best idea

Pearson for Dillon makes sense for the Canucks, not sure about the Jets. That's a good logistical trade though.

I like Garland for Severson (with an extension). I think we're definitely going to have to move out at least one top-9 winger in the next two years and reallocating Garland's cap into a RHD upgrade and potential Hughes partner makes a lot of sense.

Is Sandin much of an improvement over Rathbone going forward? That one seems like the least fitting.

If Severson comes with extension that would probably be my choice (I am a Devils fan though).

1. Severson (extended)
2. Dillon
3. Severson (rental)
4. Sandin

He's 30. Once players hit 30, they begin to regress. He had a solid season, but, he is unlikely to sustain this level of play for another 3-4 years for example. He isn't Chara, but he isn't Podz or Hogz either. 30 year olds usually don't get moved for an insane haul, unless they're very high producers. Pearson is worth around a mid 2nd rounder at most. Which is very very generous for us.

Not all players start to regress at age 30, no guarantee Pearson will be one of them

Severson with an extension is good. Severson as a rental should be an instant decline given that Garland is one of the best 5v5 point producers in the league. According to analysts, he has the most efficient contract on our team

I didn't explicitly say it, but the extension with Severson is implied. No way the Canucks should entertain trading Garland unless there's at least the knowledge that Severson would be willing to extend with VAN and what the contract ask would be.

I understand that it was implied. But when dealing away one of the most efficient deals your team has on the books, you need to be certain you are receiving similar value, if not more. Given that Severson has averaged close to .5PPG his past 3 seasons, and the inflation in AAV for defensemen, especially those who produce at such a level - it would be difficult to see Severson get anything less than 6.5M x 6-8 years on the open market (with a .5M decrease/increase depending on the desirability of the destination).

Given that Garland has 3 more years after this one at a hair under 5M, after an extension, we'd be paying Severson a minimum of 1M more (in an ideal world) - this too, in the midst of having to offer major extensions to our core, such as that which we are currently negotiating with Horvat. We cannot fix one issue by causing another, this deal unfortunately would do exactly that. Ultimately, Severson is a fantastic piece to bring in when we see his nationality, pedigree, and production. However, the Canucks will find it quite difficult to retain Severson without moving out a piece such as Myers first. Which is why I don't believe this deal makes sense for the Canucks. Ethan Bear has a much lower acquisition cost and is an RFA, which means we can move him for future assets if we cannot re-sign him, rather than lose him to FA like we potentially would with Severson.

Just to say, I think 6.5M x 6-8 years is very much on the higher end of projecting Severson's next contract.
Depending on how 22-23 goes for Severson that could be a reasonable ask but as of now I think Severson's next AAV will come in at 5.25m - 6m.

This was based off of his comparables. Weegar has been averaging the same totals as Severson over the last 3 seasons - he's rumoured to be finishing negotiations on a 6.5 x 7/8 year deal with the flames. So I don't see Severson going below 6M.

Weegar is way better analytically though
