Moving Tanev would be top 1 or 2 worst moves the Flames could make.

Perhaps. However it was interesting to not that Sutter said Tanevs injury wouldn't have held them back as much if 3 other d weren't injured during the Edmonton series. I like Tanev, but there would need to be room to resign weegar next year and upgrade a forward. Mackey is ready and deserves a shot. Calgary has a long history of poorly developing assets in favour of veterans. I don't see Valimaki garnering a large return or being an upgrade on most teams. Who else do you move then?

Canucks aren’t moving Garland for scraps. If they move him it’ll be for a top 4 RHD

Kylington is an easy one, could have just played his best season of his career with Tanev, ultimate sell high candidate, more cap than Valimaki but still easy enough to fit for cap strapped teams, contract walks him to UFA souncertainty after the 2023-24 season. Dube could also be moved, Flames have a lot of prospects that play similar roles to Dube that would be on a deal for less than a million dollars. Even if Weegar signs the high end of the rumours, $7M/year, the cap isn't overly hard to figure out with Lucic gone, Valimaki likely gone, a Dube or Kylington deal make it work. With the likes of Schwindt, Pelletier, Zary after his rookie camp showing, Coronato, Klapka and Duher to an extent, Dube's job could be in jeopardy if this year isn't better than the last few.

Neither of those players are scraps, and cap space will need to come from somewhere for Vancouver.

Tanner Pearson, Jason Dickinson, Tucker Poolman will all be moved before Garland. He is an elite 5v5 point producer. Not downgrading him

Who is taking these players? A flat cap has produced a plethora of 3rd and 4th liners on PTOs or still sitting as FAs. Subban just retired without a contract. I realize Garland is good 5 on 5. However, teams rarely trade for bad players. If Horvat has a bounceback season, Vancouver will be in the same place as Calgary and risk losing him to free agency. Or conversely, signing him at a much higher AAV and have to trade assets for someone to take a dud contract.

So your solution is to trade one of the best 5v5 point producers in the league at an extremely efficient contract?

I doubt it was Columbus' best solution to trade Bjorkstrom for two mid round picks or Vegas to trade Pacioretty for nothing. You're right though: Vancouver could pay a team to take Ennis or OEL

Valimaki would be an AHLer and Dube would be a 3rd liner at best. Trading a top 6 winger on a great deal for those two would be an awful move

Dube was oy 20points less than Garland playing on our 3rd and 4th lines. Valimaki is an upgrade on Schenn and more defensively sound than Ennis. He has just been burried in Calgarys Defensive depth for too long.

Valimaki would be 5th on the depth chart at LHD for the Canucks. He’d be behind Hughes, OEL, Rathbone, and Dermott. He adds no value to the trade from the Canucks perspective. Garland put up almost all his points at 5v5 and spent some time on the 3rd line last year. He’s significantly better and more valuable than Dube. If the Flames want Garland the Canucks would ask for Weegar or Andersson, which I doubt Calgary would give up

20 less points is pretty significant. Garland wasn't getting much ice time either. He was top 32 in 5v5 points this past season in the entire league.

Flames won't Trade Tanev at all and Milano isn't getting $1.7mil, especially if he's going to be Scratched. I see maybe $1-1.25mil max

Dube > Milano Dube is going to put it all together for a breakout season. 25+ Goals and 50+ Points

Wait till the Trade Deadline when we have accrued ton of Cap Space and VAN is out of the playoff picture, then we can just ship rebuild Picks & Prospects for Garland

In the meantime, move Kylington or Valimaki + Duehr + a 3rd for Luke Kunin to bolster our Forward Group. Could also look at Fabian Zetterlund, Michael McLeod and Nathan Bastian out of NJD. Otheriwse, NAS's Michael McCarron would be more ideal than Brett Ritchie too
