They cant really evaluate 74 players in camp. You're right. Virtually everything has been predetermined by all teams except for maybe 2 NHL roster spots
23 NHL position, 25 AHL positions, Then fillers for ECHL,

Yeah, but it still mind-boggling that they invited 20 more players than the usual number. No matter how good a forward prospect does in camp, he's not making the team so I really don't get all those free agent invitees and standard AHL contract guys. There are only 2 roster spots to be filled and they're on defense.

Yea, I agree with 74 seems unruly. But the team will be separated into 2 or 3 squads, and if there is enough ice (I'm sure their is), they won't affecting the players on the NHL team.

Here's a story from the early 60s. The Leafs held their training camp in Peterboro. Split in two, the Leafs and their Rochester AHL Americans .
Larry Hillman who was Rochester player the previous year, had been invited into the Leafs camp.
When he entered the cafeteria/dining area, his old Rochester Americans gave him the razz, as now he was sitting with the Leafs. Hillman was a bit frustrated by this . So, he called a his old Rochester mates, a bunch of "ham and eggers". A bit demeaning but in a good way.
Hillman during the season was demoted to the Leafs and sent to Rochester. Often Hillman was find eggs (no always in their shells) in his shoes, pockets or bed.

Read the biography of Hillman. Quite the story. A long career with multiple Cup wins and finished his career in the WHA. And apparently a wonderful guy too.
