Dillon to NJ

Created by: Rooney
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 22, 2022
Published: Sep. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The point of this trade was simply to create an open roster spot for both Samberg and Heinola. NJ seems like a logical partner as they are a little thin on the left side but have a surplus of forwards. I didn't focus too much on value here, mainly addressed a need for both teams.

Thoughts on the trade?

Siegenthaler, Graves, Smith will be starting left side. Have Bahl and Okhotyuk who can also play in NHL

Good thought on need, but dunno if Jersey wants two years of Dillon compared to one of Johnnson. Of course Johnsson's M NTC might have a say too.

If he would waive, what about Pearson for Dillon? Both have 2 years left, similar age and value. Could work for both teams if Hughes plays right side in VAN.

I would say I'm less worried about the NTC clause for AJ, as I think the Devils could threaten to just throw him on waivers and even push him to the AHL and get the $1m cap room while bringing up a $800k player and just letting the savings sit there.

As for Dillon, I don't love the second year and his analytics are dropping. I'd rather run with a young player honestly and let Bahl and Okhotiuk fight it out.

I feel it's a fair deal, just not right for the Devils due to the second year and preferring to see a youth movement.

I don't think it's a bad move for NJ tbh. As it stands right now the Devils are loosing both Severson and Graves next year. Dillon is an upgrade on Smith and gives their young guys a lot more protection and I think he would be a good partner for Nemec next year as a rookie (assuming Hughes comes in and plays with Dougie or Marino).

If the clause is an issue you could probably have Tatar or Wood involved instead

Does Vancouver really want Hughes to play his off side? I feel like that could be really bad for them. Although he did make strides defensively he still needs alot of work in his own end to be a real elite defender in my opinion and I don't think just throwing him on his off side would help that. I could be wrong though.

In interviews he says he welcomes playing the off-side, and thinks he'll be quite comfortable in both zones. We'll see if the experiment works... if it does VAN then has a hole on 2LD IMO. If Rathbone earns it that would be awesome, but a lot to ask of him yet.

We'd have to do something with Smith...would be no point in having him if we acquired Dillon.
And Luke probably arrives in April.
Bahl, Okhotiuk and Walsh will all have chance to win 3LD. So might be too crowded.

Hmmm, honestly never thought of that one. Based purely off of need I would go for it. My main goal is to open up roster spots for WPG on the back end and Pearson could slot into the 3LW spot quite nicely.

This seems to be exactly the kind of move the Jets need to make.
A bit if depth scoring and a roster spot for Heinola/Samberg etc.
If the Devils don't have the need for Dillon, then the same type of trade, involving a player of corresponding value to Johnson on any other team, would be most welcome.
