Offer-sheeting Robertson

Created by: AndrewGoalie33
Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 22, 2022
Published: Sep. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I see no reason why Detroit shouldn’t do this. Their prospect pool is so utterly stacked that they can afford to miss out on the majority of the 2023 draft, and Robertson gives them a sick top-line right now, plus a sick future top-line when Raymond (and potentially Kasper/Berggren?) makes the jump.

Is it? You'd think Dallas would've already signed him to that by now. I'm sure Nill would love to match it but it sounds like he's tied up by the owner. Wouldn't surprise me either way.

Offer sheets are pointless. They only go through when they're for way more than the other club can afford, or is willing to risk being stuck with, because the contract has driven into untradable territory. Otherwise, all they accomplish is bad blood between GMs, soured relationships with a player and the club, tied up assets while the process plays out and then if they actually go through - the prize is giving up a boat load of picks for an overpaid player.

I will never understand the fascination with offer sheets.

Dallas easily matches that and deals with the cap after.

Dallas matches. They have more cap space than their Capfriendly page shows. After burying Khudobin and sending another player down, they have 8.5'ish to play with.

Easily matched and SY ruins his relationship with Jim Nill and Dallas.

Dallas matches easily and you've just pissed off Jim Nill who's a good friend of Steve Yzermans. Good job.

Detroit's prospect pool is stacked. So is the 2023 draft. Detroit will likely miss the playoffs and their pick will be in the 8-14 range. Loads of good prospects there. Their pick has a small chance of becoming Connor Bedard or Matvei Michkov. Detroit's prospect pool will be more stacked after this draft. Detroit could possibly look to trade 2024 or 2025 for a high impact player to compliment and help push the talented young players they have and make Detroit into a true playoff contender.

I also guarantee you that if Detroit offer sheets Robertson. Dallas will one day offer sheet Seider or Raymond to a contract that Detroit couldn't afford but would reluctantly match because Detroit can't lose those guys.

Offer sheets rarely happen for a reason.

Also, "team Xs prospect pool is stacked" isn't ever accurate. Most of those kids will never be regular NHLers, regardless of how "stacked" NHL Network says it is.

Gee, the Wings might be offer the cap with bonuses, which reduces the cap next year with Larkin and Bertuzzi to sign.
Seems like a waste of three draft picks, when 8m gets you a good UFA next season for free.

First off Yzerman would never do that to Jim Nill, And secondly it's an easy match. If Nill wanted to he could move both Faska and Khudobin to open up more cap space.
