My Top 10 Every Position

Created by: UpsideDownQue
Team: 2022-23 Custom Team
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 22, 2022
Published: Sep. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Some really tough calls. I think in general tier rankings are better than list rankings cause there isnt an arbitrary cutoff after 10 players. In some cases there were guys from 8-15ish who are all interchangeable, but I tried my best to choose just 10 for each position. I also might be forgetting some guys

I like the lists, but, I had the following changes.

Connor over Robertson
Letang over Spurgeon

Those would be the only changes I would make.

Really good list

Leon top RW
Crosby 2nd or 3rd center spot
Mikko above Marner
Connor over Robertson
Kane over Pavelski

I actually forgot about Rielly but Im still not sure if Id put him in the top 10. His offense for sure is better than a lot of those guys but the defense is lacking too much for me. I added him as an honourable mention and he'd be somewhere in the 11-15 range for me

I just dont see how Demko better than Hellebuyck or Andersen. Demko is an above average starter but hes never really put up big numbers (regular or advanced stats) while all of those guys above him have

Even just looking at GSAx last year theres a big gap between him and everyone I put ahead of him:

Vasilevskiy +17.91
Shesterkin +37.18
Hellebuyck +13.61
Sorokin +21.55
Saros +12.6
Markstrom +15.61
Andersen +28.46
Kuemper +15.86
Demko +7.3

Look at the advanced stats at 5v5 this season. He was consistently around the top 5 in the big categories. Canucks had the second worst PK which heavily impacted his overall stats, but in 5v5 he was easily a top 5 goalie

He was better at 5v5 but I dont think its fair to just ignore all special teams play lol

I would have a tough time succeeding on the powerplay that is run by JT Miller and Tyler Myers. The difference between his 5v5 play and PK play is staggering

GSAx already accounts for shot quality so you cant really blame it on the skaters or a poor PK/PP unit. Overall hes still a tier behind those guys imo. He's still young and will probably trend up over time but right now I think around #9 is good for him

I think it is a consensus that Demko is in tier 2 below Vasi and Shesterkin. He also had the second highest games played this season. You can definitely make an argument for Hellebucyk as well but Demko's stats dipped near the end cause he was overplayed. His 5v5 stats are still undeniably top 5 in the league, if not top 3

Pettersson is not above Aho or Bergeron. Malkin can't stay healthy so its hard to say. Pettersson needs a produce like he did in the second half of last season, but over a full 82 games

Id go Tier 1 as Vasi and Shesterkin, then Tier 2 as Hellebuyck, Sorokin, Saros, Markstrom, and Tier 3 as Andersen (bubble tier 2-3), Kuemper, Demko, Oettinger

If Demko can put together a full elite breakout year like everyone in tier 2 did then Id have no problem with him moving up, but he just hasnt done that yet. His 5v5 play is top 5 or top 3 like you said, but I wouldnt ignore all special teams play just to put him up a tier when he hasnt put up across-the-board numbers like all of those goalies in tier 2 have (substantially higher GSAx and SV% in their peak years). That could change as soon as next season but hes just not there yet imo

Having him in the same tier as Oettinger is really bad. Oettinger had a good playoff series, but he was nowhere near as good in the regular season
