If you think Montreal could be good this year then this is a decent trade. They need help on that right side D, and Mike Smith/Jake Allen tandem is bad but its better than their current tandem. Since Montreal will probably be bad this year, and this trade brings them over the cap too, it doesn't make sense. Montreal is better off selling what they can at the TDL and picking up picks and young players

You could bump the Bear trade down to a 3rd or 4th at this point if there doesn’t have to be a contract/salary going back to the Canes.

Montreal's eating $7M worth of cap for you *and* sending you what's most likely a high 2nd rounder? Like, sure, those are 2 useful players and Mike Smith, but it really doesn't make a ton of sense for a rebuilding Montreal team to be adding veterans on expensive deals like this.

This offseason has shown time and time again how expensive moving cap is going to be. If the Oilers were going to drop this much on the Habs, they need to add something significant.
