WhyNot

Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 24, 2022
Published: Sep. 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Aside from most of the youths in Red Wings probably needing getting used to NA rinks in Grand Rapids first, I wouldn't be sad seeing this roster this season. Torontofans may or may not get emotional, but Bertuzzi/Sebrango is a nice get for Nylander.

Depends on Torontos confidence in being able to retain bertuzziband quickly. They may look at it like they can't afford to resign either guy so keep nylander he has an extra year on his deal. More time to figure something out especially if they can Dubas at the end of the year.

Because it's an expiring contract for two years and no Vax worries for Nylander?

so the leafs get an older, worse player with less term who will be more expensive after this season and a middling prospect and they do this why? This is terrible for the leafs

Leafs is in need of a cap dump, Bertuzzi is only 1 year older (and have close to Nylanders stats last year on a worse team) and Nylander is coming up on UFA in 24 anyway. The Leafs will have to downgrade in any case. Question is just in what way. Possibly that Sebrango is swapped out for Savage or Lombardi.

Everyone on here knows that Nylander is a cap dump. Or something other nonsense.

Except this makes their cap worse next year. This is terrible for the leafs full stop. You dont make your weakest part worse when you are trying to win ans you can get more cap space moving kerfoot or holl for a late pick.

Nylander has played almost double the NHL games as Bertuzzi has almost as many goals as Bertuzzi has points and is far far more durable. He's also coming off an 80 point season with 2 more years of term. How is Bertuzzi equal to him?

Or an earlier pick because Kerfoot has a pile of value. Garland is an identical player to Kerfoot. There may not be two more closely similar players and yet Garland is worth a 1st for sure according to people on this site while Kerfoot is worth nothing. It's hilarious

The major issue with this is that Bertuzzi wouldn't be able to play for the leafs right now

PPG is almost the same, and that is on a team in rebuild vs Nylander who plays on a top tier team. But even so, as Nylander is a level above, this is why Sebrango (or Lombardi or Savage) is added to cover the gap. The leafs will still need to account for the Cap next year, but that is a 'Then' challenge. Possibly that some salary is retained.

@Caniac2000, if you're considering the vaccination requirement for Canada, that has been lifted, has it not?

PPG is .68 for Bertuzzi and .78 for Nylander, that is not the same thing. Bertuzzi is overrated and Nylander underrated

Looking at last season PPG for Bertuzzi was at 0.91 and Nylander 0.99 so gap significantly smaller looking at current level of quality. Whether over or underrated, that is largely subjective.

No Canadian team will be trading for Bertuzzi and we all know why. Arguments about player values, etc, is all superfluous to that.

it's always amazing how whenever someone wants to talk down a leafs value they always say that they play on this amazing offensive team, so it's clearly inflating their value, yet we get like 30 agms a day where people try and trade Nylander's linemates like they are pure cap dumps that the leafs need to pay to get rid of.
Bertuzzi scores less with more ice time, he's older, he's got less term and he's going to cost MORE against the cap very soon. And none of those prospects bridge the gap, not even close.
This is a bad trade for the leafs full stop, it makes zero sense from any angle

It makes sense in one way but it’s very circumstantial, If Bertuzzi would agree to a sign & trade where he signs a 5x 7.5 extension, which would guarantee his services for 6 years at a cheaper Cap Hit than Willy’s next deal & a cap hit barely higher than his current.

Though that is a big what if & Still doesn’t make much sense

Any Chance if the Leafs add lets say a 2nd or 3rd they can get

No, Soderblom and 90% of the other prospects are untouchable, unless a drastic overpay is given.

Toronto gets a lot worse.

Name the last time a ppg player that 25yrs old on one of the best contracts in the league gets an expiring contract and a prospect.

Furthermore we have our in Bertuzzi in our prospect system in Knies and currently in Bunting. He’s under our control for far longer although he’s not as good as yet. Bunting is probably the only player that will take a discount to continue to play with Matthews and Marner.

That seems highly unreasonable & a great thing for now not later when you need to sign your 90% of untouchables, but I think a 2nd or 3rd would be fair especially with the quality & term of Willy. but to each their own

Ah yes, the old use just the one season that grades well ploy eh? Take out last season for both players and Nylander widens the gulf significantly. So if we just go by last season, Nylander is better if we take it out, he's even better. And that includes his nightmare hold out season where Babcock played him on the 4th line for much of the season because he was a terrible coach.

That sounds like a great thing that can be a big problem, trying to balance all those guys will be hell on Yzerman, there will be a point where the cap runs out if your prospect pool is that good, There is only so many roster spots, someone is bound to leave eventually

Unlike Toronto, Detroit doesn't have a window of when they will be competing. Could be anywhere from 2-4 years. It isn't unreasonable to want to see the players that your organization drafts actually get a chance to play for your organization before they are moved. The 90% was just a rough guess as Detroit has a boatload of prospects projecting to be NHL players. Will all of them make the NHL, nope. Will some of them get dealt before seeing what they truly are as players, absolutely.

Soderblom for a 2nd or 3rd doesn't make any sense. I am assuming you watched him against Toronto in the prospects camp in TC. There is a chance he is a gem and becomes a perennial power forward. How dumb DET would look in 3 years when Willy is gone and Sodes is tearing it up on an ELC contract.

Uhm Yes they do have a Window & It’s about to Open when Boston goes into their rebuild & Florida realizes that Tkachuk isn’t Huburdeau. Yzerman just loadsd up on middle 6 talent & defensive depth & stability plus adding Husso who is also signed for a bit, I understand that Soderblom looks like a fantastic prospect but i have also i’ve seen several people rank other wingers ahead of him in the depth chart like, Berggren & Andreasson. Soderblom may very well be untouchable which is fair, he looks like a stud which is why I asked. But lets put this into perspective Quick.

If Willy resigns in Deteoit for ex. & makes lets say 8-9 mil when the cap is supposed to rise drastically, If he is a 30+ Goal Scorer & 80+ Point player, it’s not as bad as you think when you also factor in a 3rd in a very deep 2023 draft who can potentially be just as good if not better( Yzerman found Soderblom in the 6th round mind you). But I understand the logic, He is your Knies but you need to see how he adjusts to North American Ice
