Way Out Matty for Laffy

Created by: busters99
Team: 2022-23 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 24, 2022
Published: Sep. 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A way-out trade that will never happen and I am not sure I want it to but could make sense.
Both draftees have significance. Laffy is NYR's first ever #1 overall and Beniers is the first ever pick in Kraken history. Cancel out?

Kraken can handle Lafrenière's next contract, have Wright already drafted as a replacement, they add needed young talent to wingers and a potential leader for years to come
NYR gets a physical Center that can slot in at 3C right away, 2023 cap relief, and relieve the top 6 LW log jam

Lots of pain on both sides
Lots of risks on both sides
I would say a one for one of top young players never happens, but this fulfills needs that could possibly outweigh the backlash
The Kraken needs a young leader to take control and lead going forward.
Laffy has experience, is a high-ceiling winger, can fit in on the 1st line, and is poised to take a leadership role
The NYR need a young high-ceiling Center that can handle 3C duties now; LW is not a priority

Beniers is a way better prospect and player imo. Kraken should say no imo.

Beniers has looked better in his 10 game stint than Lafreniere has looked in his 2 year career so far. Why would the Kraken even consider moving Beniers for a downgrade, or even at all, especially since he was the Kraken’s first ever pick?

I mean, the difference is upside is huge too. Beniers has 1C upside, whereas Lafreniere has 1W upside. You can groom a player into a 1W role. True 1C are harder to find, let alone groom into that role.

Why would any team be giving Lafreniere a “leader” role? He hasn’t earned, and unless you someone like McDavid, you aren’t going to be gifted a leadership role either.

Point taken, and why I said lots of pain and backlash from the fanabase.
At this point, Beniers is an unknown
NYR wants players to develop their 200-foot game first. Lafreniere has been blocked so far from almost any PP time but has been a very efficient scorer 5v5. Given 1st line and PP1 playing time his numbers would shoot up. During the playoffs, he didn't back down from whatever was thrown his way and in general carries himself impressively like a leader. The Kraken could grow with him.

5v5 goals through first 101 NHL games:
38 - Matthews
27 - Crosby
24 - McDavid
21 - Lafreniere
20 - Hischier
18 - Stamkos
17 - Kane, MacKinnon
16 - Hall, Yakupov
15 - NugentHopkins
13 - Tavares
10 - Hughes

Appreciate the out-of-the-box thinking for sure.

I think when it comes to leadership, the Kraken already have a solid veteran leadership group, and it's entirely possible Beniers and/or Wright grow into leadership roles over time. To me that's not something they need to hunt for outside the organization at this time.

I agree with you that Lafreniere has been quietly efficient and has much more room to grow, but Seattle has a number of top-six quality left wing options so it's not as much of a glaring need. They also drafted Wright to form a 1/2 punch at center with Beniers, not as his replacement. For those reasons as well as the premium placed on young potential franchise centers, I believe Seattle would much rather just ride the Beniers wave, but this is an interesting thought exercise.
