Close to the TDL

Created by: ChiHawk

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 25, 2022
Published: Sep. 25, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Close to the TDL these are the 3 players most likely to move for the retention spots. Assuming Toews picks up where he left off at the end of last season, Kane still performing as he always has, and Domi doing well in a top 6 role. These are my predictions, who they go to, and the return.

Easy no from the Leafs, we aren't giving up a 2nd for a cap dump. Hawks will need to pay up to get rid of that contract

It's an expiring contract. Do you do any kind of thinking before posting these replies?

LMAO a cap dump? Hawks acquired him for 1 year for the sole intention to move him for assets; your comment makes zero sense

Like I said in my description, if he is playing like he was at the end of last season, then he absolutely is worth a late 1st

hes going to be 35 going into he playoffs, hes toast my man. A 2023 1st can get someone younger, better, and worth actually trying to keep than Toews at his age and his level of play.

As of the end of last season, he was playing well and hardly toast. Like I said, all dependent on how he's playing, but if like the end of last season, there will be teams willing to pony up a late 1st for a leader like him on and off ice and someone who still plays a defensive shut down role and top 10 at the dot.

Meaningless games against teams who arent in the playoff hunt or already clinched etc. That is Never a barometer when teams and players have literally nothing to play for and going through the motions of the last month.

His numbers are getting worse, hes not some dominate 2 way centre anymore, and the little offence he can create now does not make up for his decline defensively. Hes just not worth it. And hes no model leader and and off the ice now. The Beach stuff has tarnished that rep of his, 31 other fan bases would agree on that.

I'm talking about the last 3rd of the season, not the last 10 games.

If he was a dominate 2 way center, it would be (2) 1sts and a top prospect. Clearly he's not, and a late 1st is hardly a steep price to pay for a lock down 3C, which is what he is at this point, and a team that needs a excellent 3C (2C in a pinch) for a playoff run it really isn't expensive. Late 1sts are nothing but a bag of magic beans which is why they are traded often for proven assets.

He is a leader, 31 teams (not fans, that's irrelevant) would agree he's one of the best locker-room guys in the NHL.

Not really. Kane isn't the type of piece that would 100% win them the Cup with teams like Colorado & Tampa being what they are, and they can't afford to re-sign him. So its an overpay.

Kane is the type of player to boost the offense which is one of the biggest problems the rangers dealt with in the playoffs last year

They were 7th in G/GP and half the teams above were knocked out in round 1.

EDIT: Also 2nd best PP in last years playoffs behind only Colorado (32.1% to COL's 32.8%)

I don’t see New York or Colorado considering either of those trades. Toews is past him prime and not worth a 1st even with retention. Kane with retention could be close to that but I don’t see NYR moving Kakko for a rental.

The season before Toews got sick he had a fantastic year, and the year before that he had a career season. He missed AN ENTIRE YEAR AND A HALF, not working out, not skating, not playing at all, and then came back and put up 40 points in 21-22 on a CHI team that was playing awful hockey for most of the season. Most of which came in the second half/third of the season when he got his wind back started to get back in the groove and was playing at a 60+ point pace. If he plays anything like he did in the second half of last season, he should easily put up 60 points, win 60% of his faceoffs, and be able to shut down high end players. Considering all of that plus 50% retention, he should EASILY be worth a late 1st round pick or multiple assets of comparable value. So, if we can find a third party to retain another $2.625M of his cap hit and he is playing well, there is no reason it shouldn't be that much more enticing of an add for serious teams, even as a rental. This whole narrative that he is "washed" is just people looking at his stat line from 21-22 and thinking they know what they are talking about. But I think he is going to surprise everyone this year. In fact, I think the whole team is gonna surprise a lot of people this year in general. Which actually scares me, because we probably need to get significantly worse if we want a serious shot at a top 3 pick.

I feel like you are proving our point. He missed a ton of time and at his age, he isn’t getting any better by not playing hockey. I don’t think many people have the same belief you do about the hawks being better than people think.

I'm not proving your point. Quite the opposite. He did come back and took huge steps toward returning to form as the season went on. If most of his production only came from the last half/third of the season, that means he progressed to a pace that is beyond what his stat line looks like. And now he has had a full summer of training, which he didn't have last year because he was still sick most of the summer. I should clarify that I AM NOT SAYING they are going to be anything close to a playoff team. But multiple analytics based reporters that report on the league as a whole, not just CHI beat writers, have the same concerns I do. Yes, they are going to be bad, but are they bad enough? If the coaching change makes a bigger difference than anticipated and the team plays more effectively and consistently, they could easily play themselves out of a top 3 pick.

It's quite possible that he has a bad season, and/or doesn't have any suitors at the TDL and retires or something like that. But to say with absolute certainty that he is washed up, like so many people keep saying, is very naive. He could just as easily return to form and have a great season and continue to be productive in the NHL for years to come. No one is saying that he is worth a 1st round pick if he isn't playing well. But IF he is playing well and CHI retains 50%, he will easily be worth a late 1st round pick.

I never said he was washed up, not sure anyone else did either but I haven’t read the whole thread. People are saying that him even at $5 mil isn’t worth a 1st round pick. It’s not saying he has no worth at all

I guess you personally didn't, but there are quite a lot of people who have said that on here or implied it in some way. So I just assumed you were following that same narrative. Regardless, a late 1st round pick is probably the best case scenario for a Toews trade unless he goes absolute beast mode this season and there is a bidding war. But it is possible CHI could get that for him at the TDL if he is playing well and asks for a trade. It's all just speculative right now anyway.
