If you replace Mangiapane and Nelson with Kampf and ZAR you can likely fit McDavid and then this team is the best.

Aston-Reese is not currently signed. Let's say he signs to league minimum and take a look at the numbers.

Kampf: 1.5m, 1.03 WAR, 0.686 WAR/$
ZAR: 750k, -0.23 WAR, N/A WAR/$
Mangiapane: 5.8m, 5.32 WAR, 0.917 WAR/$
Nelson: 6m, 4.34 WAR, 0.723 WAR/$
McDavid: 12.5m, 7.95 WAR, 0.636 WAR/$

Mangiapane and Nelson are a more efficient use of cap space than McDavid. Their 11.8m is worth 9.66 wins, whereas McDavid's 12.5 is only worth 7.95. Kampf is more efficient than McDavid as well, but ZAR would be a detriment to the team. Of course, this is all using Bacon's WAR model, so if you think it's low on McDavid or high on Nelson and Mangiapane, that's totally reasonable.

Why not do WAR per 60 per $? WAR/$ doesnt account for differences in # of GP or minutes played (eg guys like Marchment has a higher WAR/60 and lower cap hit than Buchnevich but Buchnevich has a higher total WAR since he played more)

Good point. I didn't have access to WAR/60.

TOI is one of the columns in the data Patrick Bacon posts to his public tableau page: https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/topdownhockey/viz/WinsAboveReplacement2021-2022/WinsAboveReplacement

You can just add a new column dividing WAR by TOI

So I've added the TOI data to my sheet but I need to change some things before it goes into the program. Top 10 WAR/60/$ leaders, minimum 200 mins played:
1. Nathan Walker
2. Calen Addison (201 minutes played lmao)
3. Michael Ammadio
4. Matt Boldy
5. Noah Cates
6. Chad Ruhwedel
7. Seth Jarvis
8. Justin Danforth
9. Troy Terry
10. Tage Thompson

Defense is all diamonds in the rough. Their contracts are so good that upgrading the forwards becomes the only priority. In my opinion, Siegenthaler-Makar would be the second best pairing in the league, after Toews-Makar.

Edit: I'll also throw it out there that if you allow ELCs, the defense group becomes Toews, Makar, Seider, (K'Andre) Miller, Ruhwedel, Jensen
