Wait a minute. Let's break this down to Savard for Barrie & Foegele for Dadonov.
Savard For Barrie
Barrie has 2 years left at 4.5M and is above 30 years old
Savard has 3 years left at 3.5M and is above 30 years old
Barrie puts up lots of offense but is poor defensively. Power plays and playing with the 2-headed monster have also padded his stats
Savard is a bottom pairing 2-way defender on a contending team but can move up to the middle pairing in a pinch
This deal is fair for the Habs because getting 1-year back is worth the extra 1M/year. It's also in line with how the Habs want to play as they are going to have a run and gun offense this year, and Barrie, like Wideman, can help with that. Also... Barrie might help them lose a few more games which makes the picks more valuable.
Dadonov For Foegele
Foegele has 2 years left at 2.75M and is below 30
Dadonov has 1 year left at 5M and is above 30
Foegele has averaged 11 goals and 12 assists over that past 2 years and is clearly a bottom 6 winger. He is 2 years removed from his best season of 13 goals and 17 assists.
Dadonov has averaged 17 goals and 15 assists over the past 2 years. He is 3 years removed from his best season of 28 goals and 42 assists. During Foegele's best season he had 25 goals and 22 assists.
Dadonov, although early declining, is the more valuable player. On top of that the cap retention essentially means the Habs need to take on cap 0.25M year 1 and 2.75M year 2. Put another way, Foegele is not a player any team would covet... He's very much in Armia territory where as Dadonov on an expiring contract can still be expected to produce 20 goals over a full season and the hope is he can produce 50 points on a good team.
Conclusion:
We want Barrie For Savard but do not want Foegele For Dadonov. Deal?
