If the Jets were willing to retain salary on Wheeler's contract, he would have been already dealt in the summer. It is well known (beat reporters, national insiders) that the organization does not want to retain salary in a trade. As a result, Wheeler is likely on the Jets roster for this year (and maybe next).

I see the Jets trying to win this year, so I doubt Scheifele is moved.

Seems like Formenton is radioactive.

Canes pass quickly. Gardiner isn't going to play for a little while at least, and the cap space for Schiefele just isn't there. I'd rather have Necas and his blistering speed than Schiefele anyway. Especially with the rumors of Schiefele's locker room deminor.

TL;DR
Poor value
No cap
Locker room cancer
Canes pass, easily

Feel like you've been beating this dead horse today, so i'll repeat it: if the Jets are willing to eat even some of Wheeler's cap *and* take back a bunch of nothing for him, the Isles quickly say yes. The upgrade from Wheeler @ 2x$6M from Bailey at 2x$5M is worth the pair of 2nds, and you'd be doing Lou a favor by taking Martin and Panik away too. Easy accept for the Isles, though I'll echo what I said earlier - I can't imagine the Jets letting Wheeler go for such a subpar package unless he really makes himself an issue in the locker room.

The Jets aren't retaining that much on Wheeler and taking back that much bad cap. What's the motivation for Winnipeg to do that?

Zero chance the Jets move Scheifele at this point without an equivalent 1C coming back. A collection of injured cap dumps, disappointing wingers and replacement level defenseman don't get you a consistent PPG 1C on a great contract.

I disagree. Wheeler has been really bad over the last couple of seasons, barely replacement level. So he doesn't make the isles much better and theyre giving up quality picks to do so. The Isles focus should be on getting rid of Bailey next summer (buyout makes the most sense).

Yes, he has been really bad the past two years. One of the worst defensive forwards in the league, hes lucky he gets to play with elite talent to boost his point totals

For the life of me, I can't understand why people keep making proposals involving Formenton

As of now we have no idea what his future is going to be like. If he is guilty in the scandal, then he's not going to be traded now.

If he is innocent, no chance Forms is going to be traded like that

I would file this more under a trade that I wouldn't actively pursue, but as one I'd seriously consider if Kevin Cheveldayoff came to me with it. GSVA puts Wheeler as a much stronger offensive player than Bailey was last year, and while he it didn't care much for his defense, it also ranked nearly every other Jet forward pretty damn low too - so part of me wonders how much of that was affected by whatever Paul Maruice's system was doing.

For me, the upgrade from Bailey to Wheeler production-wise (plus clearing that extra Martin/Panik cap off the books) is worth a 2nd and a 3rd - especially since the 2nd is in 2024 and not in this year's good draft. With Bailey, you're going to have to be hiding a guy defensively to keep his offense in the lineup - why not have that guy be the guy who's averaging 75-80 points per year over the guy averaging 45-50?

Again though, this isn't one I'd be going out of my way to pursue - just an interesting idea I would have to think long and hard about if it came across my desk.
