this is exactly where I would have put him. Good deal for a developing defenseman.

"Solid." "Acceptable." "Fine." "Inoffensive." lots of ways to describe this.

And I mean that in a good way!

Short term if he busts. Affordable hit if he...well, hits.

With Gudbrandson, Peeke, and Boqvist all signed for 3+ years and being righties; how does this not block Jiricek?

Either a trade or if Gudbrandson plays poorly we buy him out. Or we move Bean and one of them plays on the left, which then blocks Matechyuk but he may need a bit more developing so it may work out. Feel like this blocks out Blanks if anything...

Or this could potentially make it easier to trade Peeke now that teams know his AAV. But agreed, does not bode well for Blankenburg getting a long term shot.

I feel like this contract is just security if Boqvist isn’t able to stay healthy like last season, I think it also shows that Columbus doesn’t see Jiricek as being as close to NHL ready as many people thought he was, same going for Cuelamens.

Might be a good idea not to rush Jiricek.
Rather see him playing big minutes somewhere else.

Giving Term to a below replacement level D man to ensure hes on your books for 4 more years is not ideal. And blocks prospects. Timing doesnt make sense either. No one is on the phone asking Columbus if Peeke is available, they could have waited until the season was over instead of handcuffing themselves with the contact now. Bad Deal.

Tell that to the VAN fans who keep making ACGMs for him. Or TOR. Kid only just played his first professional season. Maybe he busts, or maybe he hits. Looks like CBJ are betting on him hitting.

This gives CBJ a right-side of Boqvist-Peeke-Gudbransen (with Blanks available as well) for the next 2-3 years. Jiricek and CC are going to need a few more years to develop anyway, and when they are ready to play, they can be eased in, and we can trade someone. It's why Boqvist and Peeke's contracts take them up to, or into, UFA - team gets time to evaluate, and if they are worth a long term investment over a prospect, they can get paid, and the prospect gets shipped out.

Not to mention that this is a sport that deals with injuries which then gives time for the younger players to come in, get a taste see how good they are doing and then go back if needed to get even better. And in a year or two finding a good d man for this price range is going to be hard and if he progressives like I think he will it will be great!
