Schueneman, or Waivers option

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Benn, Jordie
Additional Details:
Maple Leafs' players are always claimed. Benn is a known entity here (although only Armia, Byron, Drouin and Gallagher remain from his time as a Hab). He would be a decent physical presence on the back end until Edmundson is back.
TOR
    Waivers
    2.
    MTL
    1. Alexeyev, Alexander
    Additional Details:
Injuries have been a huge obstacle in Alexeyev's development, but he's an intelligent 6'4 defenseman who has been used in all situations in Hershey. Could be a long-term 3rd pairing defender.
    WSH
      Waivers
      3.
      MTL
      1. Friedman, Mark
      2. Joseph, Pierre-Olivier
      Additional Details:
It's a long shot for POJ, but Pittsburgh will surely have to waive one of those two as Dumoulin, Letang, Petry, Pettersson, Rutta, and Smith are likely the top 6 defensemen and Ruhwedel does an excellent job as the 7th option.
      PIT
        Waivers
        4.
        MTL
        1. Samorukov, Dmitri
        Additional Details:
If they want to go with an unproven option, Samorukov is an intriguing name. With Murray, Broberg & Niemelainen (in addition to Nurse and Kulak being the two locks), Samorukov looks like he's the odd-man out in Edmonton. He's posted a 57% goal share last season in the AHL, and 73% in 2020-21 on a powerhouse CSKA Moscow in the KHL.
        EDM
          Waivers
          5.
          MTL
          1. Beaudin, Nicolas
          Additional Details:
Local Québécois player and a former first-round pick who keeps falling lower and lower in the depth chart as time passes. His mobility skills have not translated as expected in the big league but I believe there's still a small something to work with. However, as a small-ish defenseman who isn't great at anything, he wouldn't be my personal first choice.
          CHI
            Waivers
            6.
            MTL
            1. Välimäki, Juuso
            Additional Details:
This would require some salary cap gymnastics given Valimaki's cap hit, but I figured I'd throw his name in there despite being an unlikely option as he'd have to be a clear upgrade to warrant sending down Schueneman and risking the cap penalty if he doesn't make it.

              Waivers
              7.
              MTL
              1. Meloche, Nicolas
              Additional Details:
I think the Flames signed him to more than a league-minimum deal to disincentivize teams from picking him up when he's waived. One of Valimaki, Stone, Mackey and Meloche could be the 7th defenseman on the Flames. He isn't flashy or anything, but being 6'3 and being in the 44th percentile in Defense WAR should be sufficient to raise some eyebrows.

I don't think Beaudin will get waived this year, but I don't think he will get resigned in the offseaosn.

Valimaki would be my least favorite option, mainly due to his contract.

I don't see the Caps sending him down over Carlsson/Johansen/Gustafsson, but if so, I'd have him as the top guy on your list. I think Montreal would also look quite hard at Moverare and Samorukov.

Edit: Wanted to add that there is belief among some Pens fans that Smith will spend this year in the AHL, and they will be able to keep both Friedman and POJ.

Who do you have in mind as a great option in WPG? I see only Gawanke but he'd be around 10th-15th on my preference order.

Who do you have in mind as a great option in WPG? I see only Gawanke but he'd be around 10th-15th on my preference order.

Gawanke, Movacevic (mostly because they are RHD) and it's a long stretch but if Stanley becomes the 8th option behind Samberg and Heinola

With the back log of RD in L.A. one of their RD could be waived if Spence or Clarke force their way onto the roster as well

They won't waive Durzi under any circumstances, and unfortunately the Habs can't fit Walker under their cap.

They likely won't but they may be more willing to make a deal if Spence makes the roster.

Pens probably trade POJ before sending him through waivers.
