I think Detroit should do this, only somewhat competitive team with enough cap to do it.

Dallas says thank you very much for doing our negotiating, ships Khudobin/Glendenning/Kiviranta off for pennies on the dollar and starts the season with Robertson.

Dallas has the cap space already to match that. And:

would have to free up cap space to make offer sheet

The cost to move cap for teams that need to... is a lot. Otherwise Dallas would have just dumped Khudobin already.

Umm check there page Dallas only hs 6.3 in cap space. If they could have moved out players already they would have.

Worst case scenario for Dallas, Khudobin isn’t traded & starts the season in the AHL, freeing up $1.25M in cap space. Stars also have guys like Kero, Olofsson, Hanley, and even someone like Kiviranta who could start the year in the AHL. Not saying all of them will, but any combination of those guys gives Dallas anywhere between $750K-$2M in cap space, in addition to Khudobin’s $1.25M cap relief

CapFriendly has Dallas at $6.3M, when in reality, they have between $8-9M to play with while still icing a competitive team. They don’t NEED to make a trade in order to free up some cap space.

Send Khudobin and somebody like Kiviranta down and they get an easy 2m+ in cap space and can still run a 22-man roster.

Dallas easily matches that OS and all it accomplished was wasting everyone's time.

Offer sheets only go through when they're for way more than the other club can afford, or is willing to risk being stuck with, because the contract has driven into untradable territory. Otherwise, all they accomplish is bad blood between GMs, soured relationships with a player and the club, tied up assets while the process plays out and then if they actually go through - the prize is giving up a boat load of picks for an overpaid player.

Oh and congrats, Yzerman just soiled his relationship with Nill.

I will never understand the fascination with offer sheets.

Getting Robertson doesn't make sense for Detroit. We already have Bertuzzi. Vrána, Fabbri, Kubalík, Raymond, Perron, Zadina, Berggren, Söderblom and you're not going to put players like Perron or Vrána on a 3rd line

The fact that Roberston hasn't signed a bridge deal would scare me if I were Nill. Roberston got 40 goals and sees Kyrou, Thomas, Norris, and Stutzle all got 8-something this summer on long-term deals. He is likely asking for 9.5-10. Now the reason I would be scared if I was Nill, is that the fact he hasn't singed a bridge deal like say 3 x 7 says to me that Roberston knows he had a special year and doesn't really think he can score 40 goals again or close.

Also, Dallas doesn't want to end up in another Benn situation paying 9.5 with term for a third winger. Jeff Skinner got a 40-goal season and then 9x8 and look how that aged.

I think it is telling that Roberston doesn't think after 3 years he will be able to get anywhere near the numbers being talked about right now, and trying to get it while he can. Can't blame him for that, but if this drags on much longer it hurts him too.
