Chychrun

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 29, 2022
Published: Sep. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not much else going on.

ACGM’s these days are

1. Random lists
2. Lines for opener
3. Robertson trade
4. Chychrun trade

I have done 1 thru 3…so here goes with Chychrun…
Trades
ARI
  1. Bahl, Kevin
  2. Boqvist, Jesper
  3. Casey, Seamus [Reserve List]
  4. 2023 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Hockey News suggests market may be softening due to injury issues. Armstrong’s ask has been, “first-round pick plus a top prospect or a good young NHL player”. This offer doesn’t our ‘top prospect’ as he is likely more valuable than Chych. But it includes a few good ones. Top-10 protection on the pick.

Seems like someone they don't actually need nor should Arizona accept that anyways. Chychrun simply won't be traded until healthy and teams start getting desperate

The devils don't need someone like Chychrun. Your defense is going to be stacked. You'll probably keep Graves, Seigenthaler is solid. You'll find the dman you need without giving up anything major.

Devils fans need patience. You guys are going to make a lightyear jump either this year or next without adding much of anything.

True. Just trying to keep myself entertained until actual season stats.

It’s not terrible. Three pretty good prospect/young players. Plus a good pick. I think this would compete.

True.

I patient on the rebuild…just getting impatient for start of season!!

(In the meantime, I’ll make a few more impulse buys to fill the void).

I think next year is going to be interesting. NJ will be a destination again, so I'll be curious to see what UFAs you land.

I honestly think the only thing that separates us from a playoff spot is our goaltending. There is a chance it could be adequate…but if not, next summer will be all about getting a #1.

I would say give it 2-3 years before they are actually contending. Their prospects have immense potential but it's just potential right now.

They have their core moving forward but have a lot of expiring middle guys that probably won't be around long term. Plus other teams should be aging out soon. U think they sell this year then are buyers moving forward

I gotta disagree. There's more than potential right now. Trust me, it pains me to say positive things about the devils lol

Bratt and Sharangovich are legit young top six forwards.
The only thing I'd label "potential" is whether or not Boqvist and Bastian are more than bottom-six guys, but they're solid bottom-six players as of right now.
Their defense is legit.
Their top guys are legit.
The expiring guys will open up a good amount of space for them to snag a few solid UFAs.

Goaltending is really the only major question mark that could be difficult to address.

If we didn’t have leddy I could see it
Or if Krug is traded. Without one of those two happening I can’t see DA pulling the trigger

Im not arguing about their current roster players. I consider that their young core. What Im talking about is their prospects in Holtz, L. Hughes, Nemec, etc. They have excellent potential, but that takes time to cultivate. It's very rare that a defenseman reaches their prime before 25, Makar, McAvoy, and Fox are more exceptions than the regular.

Again I think they sell this year but not next year

Heh. That article was taking more Friedman wiggle word nonsense and treating as something to bother with. He said he thinks the Blues have interest. That's it. Which is about as big a scoop as saying people enjoy cake. No mention of how they suddenly find the cap or the pieces required to get him. I promise I have no idea why anyone listens to him. Or pays him to do that job. Or doesn't do a spit take at mention of his name.

Someone once said, “good teams get good fast and bad teams get bad fast”. I tend to agree. Devils could very easily be the former. Last year, the goaltending was bad. Maybe worst season in a decade. If you put even average goaltending on the 2021-22 Devils, they would have been in playoff picture (primarily based on GD vs xGD, but also via eye test as there were so may many games when one bad goal would deflate the entire team).

This year they may end up sellers since they have some quality guys expiring. Even if they enter playoff picture, this will not be the peak, so they will look to maximize their window. But I doubt there will be a firesale…probably just Severson and Wood.

Dman rarely hit their prime before age 22/23, but Hughes and Nemec are both very special prospects, and even if their prime may be a few years away, their current level is probably close to NHL-worthy. Hughes was the first freshman dman to be a Hobey Baker finalist in 35 years and he did it as youngest dman in college hockey. He is 4 years younger than mean age in his league (this would be like an exceptional status player winning CHL dman of year). Nemec has looked great in limited pre-season action thus far. He has 3 years experience playing against adults and has only gotten better and better each year relative to his peers. Last year, he was probably the best dman in league after Olympic break. Neither probably play more than handful of games this year, but will both be NHL regulars next year.

Holtz also has 3 years experience playing against adults. Gritsyuk is in his second KHL season. Mercer played 82 games last year. It’s not like we are running out a bunch of juniors out there.

I get that, but they already have the roster without those guys. Those guys will just bring them to the next level once they're ready. This is a team, that IMO after this year, will take a massive leap.

I feel like you are agreeing with me but phrasing it in a way that feels like they arent.

When I said 2-3 years mean when they enter their contending window (assuming goaltending comes around). I agree that Nemec could probably join the team next year on the 3rd pair. I also agree that Hughes could probably walk on soon as well.

My point is more that between now and next year the team will still have it's core young players but there will probably be quite a transformation of the surrounding players (maybe they bring back Wood but I expect all the other pending UFA's to go elsewhere and/or be sold at the deadline.

And I agree. I think they will take a step but I see them as eventually the next Juggernaut team. I think they will take big steps toward that next year but not quite there. Im reminded of the 07/08 Blackhawks with them

say it with me, WE DONT NEED CHYCHRUN. Our blue line is stacked as is. Why give up any prospects when we should just refocus on resigning Severson.

We don’t need Chychrun…was just throwing out a scenario since not much else is going on. Chalk it up to boredom.
