The Trade That Makes Sense

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 29, 2022
Published: Sep. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I really think this trade makes sense for both teams. Leafs could really benefit from a defensive right dman. New York can benefit from some more offensive threats.

Leafs love Kerfoot and his versatility but I see him being the only way to get the defence they could use and it really gives them cap flexibility as well.

3rd and 4th lines and Malgin can all be interchangeable. In this set up the 4th line is the more defensive minded line and the 3rd is more offensive. Both high energy.

Doesn't change the fact that the deal works for both teams. Toronto loves Kerfoot. New York loves Mayfield. But it addresses a need for both teams.

Mayfield has quickly become the most overvalued player on this board.

And I believe Kerfoot to be one of the most under valued on this board. I think their values are very similar. Versatile Centre vs Defensive DMan. I added a 3rd strictly because of the cap difference between the 2. which New York can absorb with no problem.

It makes sense, but I does leave the D a little crowded, Holl would definitely be on his way out.

Isles are married to their forward group. Kerfoot doesn't move the needle enough, not to mention opening up a big hole on RD this close to the start of the season with no viable replacement makes no sense for NYI

If everyone is healthy it is crowded for sure. But injuries always happen. (which they have now) And honestly giving regular nights off to a guy like Muzzin is not a bad idea.

Leafs have more offensive depth than they do D depth right now. (they had 10 NHL dmen coming into camp and now they have 6 healthy). 7 of which are high end and now there are 5 healthy high end dmen. On this AGM there would be 8 high end Dmen + Mete, Benn, Dahlstrom when healthy.

Kerfoot isn't a star which is what New York really needs. But he would help. Mayfield is a solid piece though. But I know the Isles have quite a few D Prospects that can fill the role. Mayfield is clearly better though.

He’s a #4 defenseman on a great contract. Worse defenseman have returned 1st rd picks. How is he overvalued?

This doesnt help NYI at all. They dont need a middle 6 C and at wing they also have way too many middle 6ers. Not to mention what physical top 4 defensive dmen go for nowadays. Also why would NYI willingly help TOR out of a cap crunch especially with how valuable cap space is rn, while at the same time creating another hole with the roster? Believing that NYI wants kerfoot is wishful thinking on your part.

Who replaces Mayfield as a 20 minute per game RHD for the Islanders?

This is horrendous for the isles. The isles have enough middle six forwards. What a joke!

I don’t even think Kerfoot’s mother loves him as a player lmao. This doesn’t address a single need for NY.

I've gotten into it quite a bit with Leafs fans in their trades for Kerfoot. It's hard to say Kerfoot is undervalued because Leafs fans for a while were trading him for a 1st + more and yes, some people try to act like he's trash. Kerfoot is a solid middle-six winger on an affordable contract. IMO, at the deadline if they choose to move him, they may get upwards of a 2nd for him, but that's where I think it tops out. I still maintain is a very bad idea for the leafs to move him.

It's certainly a cycle on here lol

I'm going to avoid getting into a Mayfield value discussion as I don't think he's a bad player and far from trash. I just think Isles fans in-particular grossly overvalue him in trades. And look, it's not like fans of their own players don't do that on here, we all do, but he's been one of the most overvalued I've seen as of late.

Ok, fair enough. By trade deadline anyways they’d probably want to make an add so this gives flexibility too.

It doesn't make sense from the Islanders end. Here's their forward group:

Lee - Barzal - Wahlstrom
Beauvillier - Nelson - Bailey
Parise - Pageau - Palmieri
With some combo of Matt Martin, Casey Cizikas, Cal Clutterbuck, Ross Johnston, and Kieffer Bellows making up the 4th line.

Is Kerfoot better than a couple guys there? Sure, I won't argue that he might be an upgrade over Zach Parise or Josh Bailey. But adding Kerfoot means you're either paying someone $5M to sit in the press box or play 4th line minutes, or you're forcing yourself to trade a guy with an asset to a cap floor team (not as easy as you'd think considering there's a lot of NTCs in that group).

Beyond that, trading Scott Mayfield means that you're going to open up a hole at RD3. The Isles currently have 6 right-handed D under contract: Pulock, Dobson, & Mayfield, plus Grant Hutton (16 NHL games), Bode Wilde (banished), and Paul Ladue (3 NHL games played since the beginning of the 2019-20 season). Mayyyybe someone useful gets waived in the next two weeks. But you're taking a big gamble there, and considering that Mayfield is expected to pair with Robin Salo as a veteran mentor to a rookie LD3, you could leave yourself in a position where you have a very, very raw third pair that you need to shelter the hell out of.

I'd argue this trade only 'makes sense' for Toronto - they cut cap and get a slight upgrade at RD3. The Isles, meanwhile, add another middle-6 forward to their ever-growing pile of middle-6 forwards while also creating a very big hole on their defense, and for what? an extra 3rd rounder? Easy pass.

Leafs aren't keen on moving Kerfoot so readily, this preseason has indicated why given how they're without a top 6 center if Tavares is out.

Mayfield is the Islanders "Holl at home".
