Islanders trade

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 1, 2022
Published: Oct. 1, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
New York upgrade their top 9 and get a replacement RHD for their bottom pair.

Leafs upgrade their RHD and shed some cap.

The cap works for both teams (Leafs send Johnston to the AHL).

I think this trade makes sense for both teams.

Islander fans (and Vancouver fans) tend to hate every trade that people propose. But this make the Isles better and it makes the Leafs better.

Thoughts?

I made the Islanders version of this here https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3677265

Leafs blue line gets crouded if everyone is healthy but I would rather have that problem, then not having enough guys.

so a top 6 winger who can play C and score 50 points with no power play and PK well and a top 4 defender for a top 4 defender and a guy who would be an extra on the marlies? why?

Cap space. What do you suggest instead? A 19 man roster?

Terrible deal for the isles. They get more expensive and worse on d. Kerfoot numbers will crater outside of Toronto. Hard pass.

I wouldn’t compare Holl to Mayfield. Holl isn’t bad, but he’s a third pair guy. Mayfield has spent most of his the past four years with either Toews, Leddy or Pelech in a top four role.

They definitely down grade on D. Top 4 guy to a top 6 guy but they upgrade at forward. Kerfoot is super versatile.

Cap space + Mayfield is an upgrade over Holl. He is the type of dmen they are looking for.

Kerfoot isn’t the answer to the isles problems tho. This doesn’t make them better lol.

Swapping Mayfield for Holl will cost assets equivalent to a first

He's not a significant enough upgrade or need to add in kerfoot on top of it, especially with the leafs taking usless parts back

It's not about comparing them, the upgrade just doesnt cover a guy like kerfoot, especially with a dumpster tied to him

I think it's a good deal for the Leafs. I don't know if NYI would like it.

The problem with Kerfoot is the cap hit. He's definitely a good player, and not one they want to trade because of how he is on and off the ice, but the cap space is valuable. I imagine they really would like the ability to build up a good amount of cap space.

Kerfoot isn’t that good. He isn’t worth Mayfield.
Also Johnston’s contract can be buried without penalty.

That being said Kevin Kurz says he’s been talking to a scout who loves Ross Johnston. He also said he didn’t understand why the scout loves him lol.

He’s a good player on Toronto. He’s heavily overrated by leafs fans tho.

50 point wingers who get all their points at 5v5 because they dont get any power play time (because of the guys ahead of him) who are part of one of the best PK's in the league and can play C when needed and can move up and down the line up as needed are pretty valuable. If Kerfoot did the exact same thing with the exact same results for tampa or colorado people here would be throwing late 1sts at him

He gets to play with Nylander, Marner, Tavares or Mathews. When he doesn’t play with them he isn’t facing high end competition.

Isles have a log jam at forward already, and Hollstrom could be a guy that makes the team on top of that, which makes them sellers at the forward position. Trade makes no sense to them

Kerfoot is a solid middle 6 player whos versatile but his point production is extremely unsustainable. He doesnt drive play well and is a below average finisher. Hes also making 3.5m which doesnt help his case. So what youre suggesting is the isles give the leafs a get out of cap hell free card and take another middle 6 player (when they already have 8 middle 6ers on the roster). Not just that you want NYI to give up a solid 2nd pair big physical RHD making just under 1.5m. When those defensemen are highly valued leaguewide. Johnston is a net 0 as hes useless but doesnt count against the cap when buried. Judging by the kulikov deal holl could be had for future considerations or something close. So NYI gets a redundant piece, downgrades at RHD and takes on an extra 3m while giving a conference opponent 3m in free cap space. The isles dont need to be getting marginally better in the middle 6, they need a legit high end piece. If thats not available then they have 0 need to upgrade at F.
