Girard to Montreal

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 1, 2022
Published: Oct. 1, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Since Montreal fans always make proposals involving Montreal here's one for ya! Give the people what they want amirite!

Toews extended shortly after this trade, using most of the rise in cap in 2024 for his raise.

The idea here is to open capspace and get some futures and/or cheap bottom 6 forwards to maintain good depth.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Put Armia on waivers and do this deal!

As much as I like Evans (I think he is severely underrated) I think the deal could work. The only caveat being that Harris and Guhle may be forcing management into not making a move for another D man.

Evans is great. Heineman is also NHL-ready (IMO)... he's been one of the strongest players at camp.

That being said, Guhle & Harris are ready, but Barron... he needs some more seasoning...

I liked Heineman in his draft year, seems like Lehkonen 2.0 with his smart fore-checking and IQ. Would fit Colorado really well. One of Montreal's video scouts (Yannick St Pierre, formerly "Draft dynasty" on YouTube) loves him too which is probably why they wanted him in the Toffoli trade.

I think Montreal fans over-hyped Barron. Avs fans were aware that he topped out as a no.4 Dman realistically which was fine for Colorado as that's all they needed, but Montreal need higher than that.

I've seen a comparison for Barron which I think is rather apt... A more mobile and offensively skilled but weaker defensively Ryan Graves. That's not a bad thing, because Graves is a solid no.4.

I said at the time he got traded (in the Lehkonen trade thread on Hfboards AVS page) that Barron had some notable deficiencies in preseason; notably gap control (surprising for a guy with his skating), zone coverage/man marking in front of the net, and board battles. Seems Montreal fans are coming to realise these things now too.

Ultimately it'll come down to expectations. If you expect him to be the saviour of the defense, you'll be miserable. If you accept that he's a solid and mobile no.4 who's good in transition but not the best defensively then you'll be happy.

Not 100% sure about Heineman's defense, but love the shot, love the skating - The best defense is a good offence?

Barron's gap control is not bad this camp, but boy oh boy his board work is so bad. He stays on his feet but gets knocked off the puck every time a player leans into him. If it was one out of two times it would make sense but it's like 100% of the time. The Sens have been feasting on him tonight and I think he played against Toronto and it was the same thing. He's too toolsy for my liking right now. I hope they do the right thing and send him to Laval.

Pretty sure withthe way this camp has gone Guhle has earned a spot on LD and Harris is going to be playing RD with Barron sent to Laval (at least that is what I would do based off camp)

If the Avs were to trade Girard, this would be the right price. I know some people would look at this as an overpay but, when the cap goes up, Girard's contract will be even more valuable. Well done.

No reason for MTL in rebuild mode to trade away 2 high picks,a prospect and a young guy with term for a small puck moving and responsible LHD with Jordan Harris in the pipeline who will play the exact same role, but probably better.

"But probably better"

Good luck with that. It was only 3 months ago that Justin Barron was the next big thing, now Montreal fans are calling him soft and wamt him sent down.

Girard is also only 23 which is perfectly fine for a rebuilding club.

And then he ends the night with 2 points and plus 3... But... I swear he was awful last night. So confused as to what happened.

I bet that's gonna happen a lot during his career. He has good offensive skill and mobility for a guy his size, but will always have questionable defense. It's why a lot of Avs fans rated Helleson above Barron, as he's a much more reliable Dman defensively.

Well... He's 20, right? He can still develop a bit more strength in his legs and core so he doesn't get muscled off the puck quite as much. Unlike Girard, most defenders don't stick in the NHL until 21-23 years old. I think he can fix this part of his game, but it needs to be effectively communicated to him that it's a priority.

Try and see it from the other side. The kid is 24 years old, has not even hit his prime. He's played 344 games and has put up 144 points. He's played a 2 way game, meaning he's not just offensive.

He's far and away the best player in this deal. Will the Avs draft someone with the Florida pick who will turn out to be better? Maybe... Maybe they get a Mesar who will cure in the OHL/AHL for another 3 years and then slowly make the show and make Girard look ordinary, but right now Girard can come in and be the best defender on this team, and like Harris he can do it playing LHRD.

Do the Habs need to make this trade? Of course not. Is this a bad trade? I would argue it's not because throwing Harris, Guhle, and Barron to the wolves is also not great for their confidence and Girard can help protect them way better than Wideman or Savard.
