Something different yet the same

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
Additional Details:
I know Flames fans say they have no need for Kerfoot, but the hunt for a top 6 forward is on. Maybe that is Dube? Fact is, Kerfoot plays Sutter's 200 foot game and can produce in the top 6.

If there really is an internal candidate, then this doesn't happen. But if Sutter is telling the press the search is on, I would hedge my bets he doesn't think that player is in a Flames uniform right now.
TOR
  1. Välimäki, Juuso
Additional Details:
Not a fan of the Leafs defensive depth beyond the top 7. Now Välimäki isn't the most ideal fit either, he isn't the worst either. Would be a very good #8 option, or future trade chip.
2.
CGY
ARI
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Both Välimäki and Kerfoot go thru Arizona for 50% cap retention.

Remember the rule that one team can only retain on 3 player's salary. Don't see Arizona only taking a 3rd to retain on 2 of their 3 eligible players.

I am aware of the rule. And who else do they have who they could retain on? Ghost would be it. I wouldn't retain on Chychurn.

Why I choose them.

Now, I see the point, so maybe a 4th team gets in, but given the Yotes roster, a place they maybe go too.

I see Arizona brokering more than one trade where salary is retained. Assuming they trade Ghost with retention, I see them being able to get at least two thirds given they can retain salary in two separate trades (where they retain on one player in each), rather than just one where they retain on two players.

Could be right. There are other options.

Just went this route because I could and simplicity.

Kerfoot would be a good fit in Calgary, that's never been the issue. It's a matter of making the money work and finding the right value. Valimaki should be on the move no doubt but I wonder if teams wait to see if they can get him on waivers. In terms of fitting the money in I think there are ways but it feels like it should have been done in the off season.

Sutter's looking to see who has chemistry in his Top-9. Other than keeping Backlund & Coleman together, he says it's still wide open as to who plays with who.

I liked the pace Dube-Kadri-Mangiapane put on, so it comes down to who plays 1RW (probably Toffoli to start) and then who plays on the 3rd line with Backs & Coleman

Toffoli would probably fit well on the 3rd line, but since he's the best 1RW option we have to start, they're considering Ruzicka & Rooney (and maybe Zohorna now that they claimed him). They brought Milano in to see if he'd be a fit, but I don't think he has or will impress at all, so he very likely won't make the team

Heres what bothers me.

Injuries, they are gonna happen.
What happens when they are in the top6 for Leafs?
Kerfoot is automatic guyvto slot in.

Who else can do that?
Bottom pair? Got tons of options

That is what makes this deal semi-work.

Calgary gets some value out of Välimäki (as you have to think he gets claimed), and the Leafs get some value for Kerfoot.

Using a 3rd team (or a 4th) for retention purposes shouldn't hit them for much (see the picks) to make the money work for both sides.

Moving Kerfoot is less than ideal, but really the oy option I see frankly. Engvall (option 2) is equally versatile and for less money.

As for filling in the top 6? Jankrok can definelty play up the lineup, Engvall gets a shot, both Roberston and Steeves have looked very good at camp, Maltin looks like a different player.

Leafs have the forward depth to pull this off without loosing to much of a beat if the bug hits.

I eluded to this in my trade explanation.

Counting on Dube as that option is a high risk high reward proposition. Given Sutter's track record, I would suggest that if a proven and steady option is available, Treliving will go there.

Not discounting Dube as an option, but not signing off on that either.

I put these together based off your idea this morning, it's an interesting one for sure and there could be the pieces to make it work in terms of Calgary getting a middle 6 guy, Toronto gets cap relief and D depth, Coyotes get futures and retain.

Ignore the ol' classic Jared from London as best you can in the Leafs thread! haha.

Lmfao!

I have gotten into it a few time with Jared. Seems.to think the Leafs actually have organization D depth.

I just want what he is smoking. Hell, it's so good maybe a few ounces can be thrown into a deal to grease a wheel🤣🤣🤣

I like the Moser idea.

What Yotes fans missed is Välimäki is actually quite good at moving the puck. His D game has held him back. Could be an excellent addition for the soon to be departing Ghost.

What a guy!

Valimaki could be a huuuge IF for the Coyotes or any team, he hasn't seemed to recover from his injuries and his skating has severely regressed. Thinks the game, sees the ice really well still and has that first round pick mental game but he can't seem to get his feet to keep up with his brain anymore.

It isn't Välimäki's abilities that are in question, it's the contract and subsequent Q.O.

A lot.of teams could do well with him. It is tough to economize your game when things suddenly change, but you are right..... he does think the game very well.

More to him than a stats line.
