Opening Night Changes

Created by: WarrenB
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 5, 2022
Published: Oct. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
When everyone is back from injury, the Leafs 100% need to move out someone to make room. Robertson, Malgin and Holmberg all deserve a chance, and we really need to hang onto Holl for now. Kerfoot is an expiring $3.5M 3rd liner - he is a Swiss Army knife - but we cannot afford him this year, and don't want to lose him for nothing.

Your logic is good, but teams don't give up 2nd rounders for 3.5m players like Kerfoot...even if he worth this contract. Habs got a first rounder for taking on 6.3m Monahan and Canes got sweeteners for taking on 7m Paccoretty.

The Canucks don't want, need or have cap space for Kerfoot. Also, it's going to cost the Leafs a 2nd to move his contract, no one is giving up anything to help out Toronto.

I agree that maybe the Canucks isn't a fit, but to say that the Leafs would have to pay to move Kerfoot is ridiculous....
He had 51 points last year, can play C or wing, and only has 750k of real dollars remaining on his deal.

A team would definitely want him and be willing to move a mid pick for him.

What team would that be? Any team with cap space doesn't need him and any team that would want him, they have no cap space either. It's not that he's a bad player or on a bad contract, that's just the reality of the current salary cap situation.

Pacioretty was a point per game last year in the time he played. He got moved with a sweetener for FC

The Leafs will not have to pay to move Kerfoot

HOWEVER, theres very few teams that have 3.5mil in cap space AND most that do have the cap space don't really need a UFA (even one that scored 51 pts last yr). And most teams are set with their lineups. Somebody like a PHI or ARZ have cap space once they put a player or two on LTIR, but neither NEED or want Kerfoot to pay much for him.

Those teams that acquire him would do so as a temporary measure, but pray he can produce and stay healthy, and then they'll move him at the TDL for a MUCH better return than they paid. But they have all the risk that he might get injured/not produce on a worse team AND they've used cap space.

So while the Leafs don;t pay, I can;t really see much more than a late round 3rd or a 4th as the return, (but leafs cant be picky: they're almost 3mil or cap and either make the trade now or make it around game 5-7 of the season when Liljegren is back from LTIR). The fact is they'll get less and have less buyers once season starts until the TDL and Leafs cant make the cap long before the TDL.

If the Leafs aren't paying to move Kerfoot, they sure as hell aren't getting anything back for him unless they're taking back cap

Sure - but does anyone think that was a good move by the Knights? The moves they make are embarrassingly bad and I would hope that Dubas would strive to do better!

Hoping Dubas will do better is just asking for disappointment.
